The purpose of this study is to examine the recognition of inclusive class teachers and non-handicapped children towards paraprofessionals in special education and explore effective measures to utilize them. In-depth interviews were conducted to 5 inclusive class teachers and 12 non-handicapped children of inclusive classes in elementary schools of Jeju city.
As a result, both teachers and non-handicapped children felt less awkward towards paraprofessionals in special education as they spent more time with them. Moreover, they all felt the necessity of their presence.
Disposition of the paraprofessionals in special education should be managed flexibly considering the opinions of the inclusive class teachers. In general, they were in charge of instructional supports in inclusive classes. The teachers thought differently about fixing the positions of paraprofessionals in special education and the non-handicapped children were more concerned about the handicapped children. There was none or little communication between the paraprofessionals in special education and the teachers during the class. As the positive impacts of utilizing paraprofessionals in special education, teachers mentioned ensuring enough teaching time for non-handicapped children, lessening burden of the teachers and increasing opportunities for mutual interaction between the handicapped and non-handicapped children. Non-handicapped children mentioned ensuring enough study time, increasing opportunities for mutual interaction between the handicapped and non-handicapped children and improving the class behaviors of the handicapped children. As negative impacts, both the teachers and non-handicapped children became negligent of taking care of the handicapped children. Also, children's concentration could be interfered by the noise caused when paraprofessionals helping the handicapped children and the handicapped children could become overly dependent on the paraprofessionals.
For effective utilization of paraprofessionals in special education, recruiting proper paraprofessionals with warm heart who understand handicapped children and possess appropriate support abilities suitable for the characteristics of the children is required. In addition, continuous training for teachers, understanding of the handicapped children by the teachers of inclusive classes and development of teaching materials suitable for the handicapped children are necessary.
The implications of the study results are as follows.
First, it is important to continuously provide opportunities for both teachers and handicapped children to understand paraprofessionals in special education.
Second, flexible disposition of paraprofessionals is necessary after considering the level of disability and reflecting the demands of teachers and handicapped children.
Third, appropriate system should be established to discuss the roles and responsibilities of paraprofessionals and teachers and level of disability and development of the handicapped children.
The recommendations based on the study results are as follows.
First, additional studies targeting broader range of subjects should be conducted to propose effective measures to utilize paraprofessionals in special education.
Second, detailed and practical programs should be proposed constantly which can positively change the recognition and behaviors of inclusive class teachers, general teachers and non-handicapped children and be applied to actual fields of education.
