For Kant, The highest good concept is not the determining ground of the pure will. This point makes the property of Kant’s highest good concept. For The philosophy prior to Kant understood the highest good concept as the determining ground of the will. Determining ground is ground that excludes the opposite, and means the ought that constrains the will in reference to the activity of it. Now Kant, unlike previous philosophical understanding method, does not regard the highest good concept as the criteria which constrains the will. Then, why does he try this change? Why dose he understand the highest good not as the determining of the will, but only as the whole object of the will?
In reference to this question, Kant refers to the two opinion of the ancient Greek philosophy. For the Epicurean, the highest good is happiness, and the Virtue is contained in happiness, as means for it. On the contrary to this, according to the Stoic, the highest good is only the virtue, and happiness is contained in virtue, as the result of it. The Epicurean thinks that our lives have to has the happiness as the ground, while the Stoic thinks that we have to has the virtue containing the happiness as the ground of life. They suggest so different opinion, but there are a common point. It is that they all think that human can and must approach the highest good namely, the perfect coincidence of virtue and happiness. Although their method is different, why did they think that the highest good is the determining ground of the will? It is based on their understanding method of human nature. For according to their theory, human is understood as a being who can attain naturally the perfect coincidence of virtue and happiness.
But is it possible? Prior to critical philosophy, Kant’s highest good concept is skeptical of the this understanding on human nature. He questions whether the highest good concept can be accepted as the determining of the will, between the knowledge of God and human practical law. And the result about this question is suggested in Critique of practical reason. God is not knew to human knowledge experience. So the determining ground of the human will is only moral law, not theological standpoint. In other words, the highest good concept as the perfect coincidence of virtue and happiness is not any more the determining ground of the will, is established only as the whole object of the will. The determining ground of the will is the supreme good, namely moral law, therefore, the perfect coincidence of two conditions is possible only in the intelligible world. Then, Why does Kant establish this change? Why does he think that the highest good can not be the determining ground of the will? Above all, it is not suitable for human natural experience system. The experience structure of human knowledge is based on sensibility and understanding, by the way, the two ability does not say the possibility on the knowledge of God. However, if, as the philosophy prior to Kant do so, human transcends his own limit, so we unavoidably are mired in heteronomy and self-conceit. On the one hand, Epicurean is mired in danger of heteronomy, in putting happiness on the ground, On the other hand, the Stoic is mired in the self-conceit that regard an arbitrary criterion as something objective, in understanding human moral perfection as heroism and something divine. This self-conceit excludes an activity of the will that is not included in his own arbitrary criterion, and it builds partisanship. This moral perfection results rather a destruction of morality, as moral enthusiasm. So, kant understands that the highest good is not the determining ground of the will, and through this standpoint, he establishes the metaphysics of morals which prevents a damage of morality.
