(A) study on the visual expression form of make-up by H. Wölfflin's principles
The purpose of this study is to theoretically systematize the art of make-up application (Cosmetology) by applying Heinrich Wo¨lfflin's principles (Grundbegriffe) to the various forms of visual expression. This study is being conducted as a rebuttal to criticisms that make-up education at the academic level places too much emphasis on practical technique and lacks a theoretical basis. It aims to suggest a methodology for make-up education and its study direction.
This study included both the theoretical component and the objective data. The theoretical component consists of the make-up theory, principles of Wo¨lfflin and preceding studies based on the make-up theory and Wo¨lfflin's principles, adding the visual expression of make-up through application of Wo¨lfflin's principles. In the objective study, created was the make-up design after analyzing, through the application of Wo¨lfflin's principles, the visual expression forms of make-up shown in Paris, Milan, London, New York Collections and Haute couture during the period from 2001 to 2008.
Make-up, a kind of dress ornament form, expresses a specific meaning through embellishment of the body. Make-up forms can be is classified into beauty make-up, stage make-up, and art make-up. Beauty make-up refers to the general make-up used in daily life; stage make-up refers to the style of make-up application used on stage in the performing arts; art make-up is applied in accordance to the artist’s design. Fashion show make-up, a sub class of stage make-up, is gradually gaining importance as an artistic function and a type of functional art along with art make-up. The elements of expression in make-up are largely classified into dot (Punkt), line (Linie), surface (Fla¨che), color and texture. In other words, the make-up can express meaningthrough the diversity and complexity of dot, the motility and texture of other lines, the expression change of massiveness, the formative expression of surface by use of the skeleton, the appropriate harmony and comparison of colors, the visual effect of color arrangement by focus, and the texture of application of visual or tactile meaning.
Wo¨lfflin’s principles include various methods for conceptually grasping individual diversity. These are: linear and painterly (Das Linerare-Das Malerische), plane and recession (Fla¨che-Tiefe), closed and open form (Gescholossen Form-Offene Form), multiplicity and unity (Vielheit-Einheit), clearness and unclearness (Klarheit-Unklarhieit).
The linear and painterly are "forms closed by a clear line". In the open form, "the outline is not individually stressed but sought for connection". The planar and the recessional are respectively "the form through horizontal composition which is simply lined and arranged" and "the form for expressing recession by connecting the mobility through slanted diagonal lines". 'The closed form and the open form are respectively "the forms of regular symmetry and composition which clearly emphasize horizontal and vertical elements" and "the form of fluidity-oriented balance with almost no regular symmetry". Multiplicity and unity respectively are "forms for expressing multilateral unity by individual independence in plain and definite colors" and "forms for expressing the absolute unity by concentrating parts into one subject". Absolute clarity and relative clarity are respectively "the form for demanding exposure of the real appearance" and "the form for the ambiguous beauty, which makes an overall impression through reiteration of various colors".
As a result of applying Wo¨lfflin's principles to forms of visual expression in make-up application, linear to painterly forms showed 'the closed form dividing the sections of the eyes and mouth by the clear lines' and 'the open form unclearly combining eyes and mouth with a visible surface color in the manner of not being able to follow the substance'. The planar showed 'the horizontal form arranging eyebrows, eye and cheeks horizontally, and side by side by using line and surface' and the recessional 'the slant line form for eyebrows and eye lines, to head for hair line by using line and surface as expression elements'. The closed form showed 'the constructive form leading the horizontal line and surface of eyes and mouth to bilateral bisymmetry after making a nose the axis with a vertical line or vertical surface'. The open form showed 'the non-constructive form leading the bilateral disproportion by means of expression elements like the decorative line and surface for the liberal propensity chasing a chance instant'. The multiplicity and the unity showed respectively 'the multilateral form available with individual observation of eye, eyebrow, eye shadow, eye line, eyelashes, blusher, and lip by using expression elements of texture', and 'the unity form leading to visual axis by subordinating other elements through expression elements of line, surface, color, and texture as object'. The absolute clarity and relative clarity showed respectively the clarity exposing the real face itself by using expression elements of line, surface and color' and the relative clarity, 'not exposing the real face, but constructing the whole impression through reiteration of color'.
After analyzing the visual expression forms of make-up by applying Wo¨lfflin's principles, it was found that the unity was the most common formas a whole, followed by the sequence of the multiplicity, the linear, the recessional, the absolute clarity, the closed form, the open form, the painterly, and the planar. The least common was the relative clarity. Analyzing by season, we see that in 2001, 2005, and 2006 linear could be observed most frequently. In 2002 the closed form was observed most frequently; in 2003 and 2008 the multiplicity; and in 2007 the recessional. In the season of 2002, 2004 and 2005, relative clarity forms did not appear, while the open form was not shown in 2006. Painterly, planar and relative clarity forms rarely ever appeared.
By collection, make-up of all forms appeared in haute couture and Paris collections, while relative clarity forms were not apparent in Milan and London collections. In New York collections, the painterly form did not appear. Unity make-up was the most common in Paris, Milan, London, and New York collections, followed by the sequence of the linear, the recessional and multiplicity in Milan collection; the sequence of the linear, the absolute clarity, and the multiplicity in New York collections; and by the sequence of the linear and the multiplicity in London collections. On the other hand, multiplicity was the most common form in haute couture, where recessional and unity followed it in sequence.
Of the five principles of make-up elements, the most commonly used element was the line, followed in sequence by the mixture of surface and color, and by the mixture of line, surface, and color. The element of the least use was the mixture of dot and line. Dot and surface were used most in the open form while the line was used most in the linear form. Color was used most in multiplicity texture in unity; the mixture of dot and surface in recessional; the mixture of surface and color in unity; and the mixture of line, surface and color in absolute clarity. The mixture of dot and line however appeared only in the open form.
On the basis of the said study, the make-up which Wo¨lfflin's principles apply to was created. Served as reference for creation of make-up was 2008 S/S trend presented at Samsung Design Net, Interfashion Planning, and Color & Fashion Trend Center of Korea. After establishing concept from Platinum City to make out image map, ten kinds of make-up were designed. Out of them only five kinds of make-up, based on analysis result of fashion collection, were presented on faces of the real models. For the image map and the illustration of the work order, Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and Adobe Illustrator CS program were used.
