This article examines the identity of musical grammar of Jejudo in Shaman Ritual music. On the basis of precedent studies, I intend to reorganize the shaman ritual music of Jejudo, through which I will suggest the possibility of expanding the discussions on the identity of musical grammar of Jejudo. What I have utilized in this paper are the precedent research results and data, movie clips of Chilmeoridang-gut and movie clips of Donggimnyeongli Jamsu-gut, of which I have participated in an on-site survey. The following is the result.
First, the rhythmic patterns most widely used are the combination of irregular beats and regular beats, and the free style time of 3 small beats. In most ceremonies except for dance, quadruple time of 3 small beats is used the most, which is considered a general characteristics of the Korean music. Since quadruple time of 3 small beats can be variated to quadruple time of 2 small beats when played in quicker tempo, and to 12 time of 2 small beats when played in slow tempo, it can be considered the representative rhythmic structure in the gut music of Jejudo.
Second, the musical instruments are named yeonmul in Jejudo and it is also used for jangdan. Thus, it is considered the most appropriate to express the gut jangdan of Jejudo as **yeonmul. The gut jangdan of Jejudo has been explained in the terms made for Namdo pansori in studies that have been conducted so far, and this should be corrected as it is not suitable for explaining the musical structures of the gut music of Jejudo.
Third, it has been found that the lyrics arrangement to the rhythmic pattern of quadruple time of 3 small beats is similar to that of the taryeong-type, puneomjanggu-type, and gutgeori-type. Taryeong is widely used in Gyeongeodo while puneomjanggu is used in Pyeongando. Gutgeori is also used in the Gyeonggi-gut, the Seoul-gut, and the Pyeongando- gut. Also, it has been found that the lyrics are arranged to meters of 4⋅4(4⋅2), 3⋅3. The meter of 3⋅3 is considered to originate from the folksongs of Hwanghaedo, and it seems to be in close relation to the gut music of Pyeongando as it is also used in the gut music of Pyeongando.
Fourth, simbang himself plays the musical instrument while singing solo in Bonpuri yeonmul and Eumyeong-type jangdan, and the beats are irregular since he performs while sitting. Such characteristic appears in the shaman rituals of the inland area as well. On the other hand, the jangdan of Samseokyeonmul played by somi is regular, while simbang who is free from playing an instrument, have various physical expressions in ritual actions and dance. The accompaniment of Janggwi or Ulbuk played by somi is largely of the music pieces that are inserted, and the playing styles differ from one another implying that they are all different type of pieces. Actually Seoujetsori is a piece from minyo-type, while Gunungdeokdam is considered a Changbutaryeong-type.
Fifth, Ulbuk, Seolsoe, Daeyang, and Janggwi, the musical instruments of the gut music in Jejudo, look similar to Buk, Ggwaenggwari, Jing, Janggu from the inland area, but they are played in totally different styles and tunes, which creates unique tunes of the Jejudo-gut. The music of the Jejudo-gut seems to be similar to that of Seodo including Hwanghaedo, Pyeongando, Hamgyeondo in terms of percussion-oriented orchestration, but it is distinct in that Ulbuk takes the large part in the Jejudo-gut. In addition, Janggwi is presumed to be different from the other instruments in either the type or the way it was introduced, considered of its usage which is completely separate from the others.
Sixth, there have not been enough discussions on the characteristics of the scales of the gut music of Jejudo in the precedent researches. Thus it is not the time to decide on the scales of the gut music of Jejudo, however, the similarities in the scales to the Gyeongseodo region can be found as in the case of the folksongs.
