As the 11th descendant of Toegye(退溪)Lee Hwang(李滉, 1501∼1570), Lee Mando(1842∼1910) passed the national examination at the top when he was 25 years old and served in many government jobs. Returning to hometown after resigning from government jobs in 1880, he was concerned about the future of country. As Korea was merged by Japan in 1910, he died for the country after fasting for 24 days. When Lee Mando lived, the national administration was in chaos due to invasion of foreign power as strong and large countries compelled to open the country. As the national sovereignty was lost due to Japan's intentional tactics for invasion, both the country and nation were unhappy. Before passing the national examination, Lee Mando put individual before country. Focusing on scholarly contemplation for ruling others by training oneself, he dedicated himself to study for national examination. After passing the national examination, he served as an official, remembering the lesson given by father, “You should sacrifice your life if the country is in jeopardy.” The recognition on the reality into which country and nation were thrown was that solidifying the learning and heightening the right way should be the fundamental of ruling rather than importing the foreign civilization. He thought that the confusion caused by foreign power could be prevented by excluding wrong learning and injustice, restoring abolished lecture-hall to teach Confucianism so as to establish right way. Although many literary works were left by Lee Mando, those which strongly reflected the sense of reality were written when Chosun was in difficulty. The poems such works written during Gabogyeongjang(甲午更張), works deploring on scenes that gold was excavated by Japanese, works he wrote when appealed, works written during fast well showed the spirit of anti-Japan, worrying about the future of fatherland and banishing Japan. The written appeal which said that absurdity should be corrected was full of deep agony and consideration on reality. He logically confuted the injustice of 12 provisions to be newly amended and the 10 departments to be newly established. He also commented on the wrong point of Japanese diplomatic minister (diplomat). In the written appeal where he said that the 5 enemies should be punished at the time of Eulsa Treaty(乙巳條約), he confuted the injustice of treaty forcibly concluded with intimidation of Japan and divulged the misconduct of 5 enemies(五賊). In the appeal written during fast, he recognized that the then reality was dark and hopeless. Recognizing that he was also responsible for unhappiness of nation and king, Lee Mando said that he would die by fasting. The letter sent to grandson of relatives before death showed his lamentation and abandonment for failing to overcome the reality of hopeless country. As the descendants such as sons, daughters-in-law, niece and diverse relatives were considerably affected by the literary works of Lee Mando where sense of reality was formed, many persons contributing to the independence were cultivated.
