The aim of this paper is to closely examine the process by which Shilla's songs, or hyangga, came to be discovered as vernacular texts written in the “national script.” The discovery followed the work of active deciphering that went on during the colonial period, and gave rise, in turn, to the establishment in Korean literary histories of hyangga as the first accomplished examples of Korean “national literature.”
Hyangga was transcribed using an orthography which borrows Chinese ideographs for their phonetic value. Traditionally, this system of transcription was considered strictly auxiliary since it deviated from the proper norms guiding writing in literary Chinese. This meant that in order to accept this orthography as an example of the “national script,” a phonographic “national language” had to be imagined beyond the actual Chinese ideographs through which hyangga was transmitted. Such an imagination excluded the existing orthography itself as no more than the transparent medium that simply reflected the “national language.” In the early modern period, the existing hierarchy in Korean was greatly disturbed, and the process of othering Chinese script and writing had the effect of dethroning formal literary Chinese from its privileged position at the top. Before this process of rearrangement was concluded autonomously, however, hyangga was discovered by Japanese scholars as a form of “Korean writing,” and its value began to be discussed.
With an early experience in othering Chinese script and writing, Japanese scholars applied wholesale their own tradition of rescuing the vernacular from borrowed orthography to the study of hyangga. With the political context of Korea's colonization serving as the occasion, these Japanese scholars took interest in the Korean language from the perspective comparative linguistics, and their interest in ancient Korean led to the discovery hyangga both as text and as expression of national language. Within such a legacy, the linguist Ogura Shinpei sought to reconstruct Shilla’s language from the entire corpus of hyangga. At around the same time, Tsuchida Kyoson also focused on the form of hyangga and discussed its literary merit. The attribution of various values to hyangga and the ensuing abundance of discussion drew Korean scholars into the field as well, and their studies introduced a greater degree of scientificity and systematicity to the discussion. For example, Yang Judong attempted a more thorough interpretation of hyangga from a linguistic perspective, while Jo Yunje placed hyangga within the rubric of “national literature,” endowing it with value both as “literature written in the national language” and “literature of the people of the nation.”
The two scholars’ endeavors completed the initial discovery of hyangga as the origin of “national language” and “national literature,” with a particularly modernistic twist. In Korean scholarship, this discovery has been considered “genuine,” as opposed to mere discovery by Japanese scholars. Between discovery and genuine discovery, however, there is no absolute break. This may be the reason why matters relating to the phenomenon of discovery often underwent diminution or active concealment within histories of Korean national language or Korean national literature. This paper has exposed one aspect of that concealment. What really needs to be addressed regarding the discovery of hyangga, however, is the lack of skepticism regarding the applicability of the question of “national language” to hyangga. It is important to note that the equation of hyangga with national script was a result of substituting the historical context of national orthography as developed in Japan with Korea's, thereby eliding the uniqueness of the Korean situation. Korea, which invented a phonography entirely different from borrowed transcription system, lies within a tradition different from Japan’s history of orthography. We must therefore begin our inquiry by understanding transcription of hyangga as an application of written language that is entirely different from the system of phonography. Such an approach transcends the parameters of the history of national language, a history which consolidates the self-identity of national language by differentiating it from Chinese script and writing.
