This work tells the story of peopling of the Unites States from the colonial period to the early twentieth century up to the time of the development of regulatory as well as restriction system. Considering relative obscurity of the field of immigration history which is in its early developing stage in Korea, I would like to engage in an introductory work covering the free immigration period and thus hoping to stimulate interests of the students in the Western history.
The seventeenth century movement of population from Europe to the continent brought the first settlemennts to the Atlantic seacoast. In North America the European pioneers were the English origins who in the course of a few generations established their colonies in America and then pushing themselves inland in all directions, and finally overwhelemed the continent.
The eighteenth century the newcomers had pushed those lands beyond the Alleghenys to the West, and thus continued to help the nation to expand as much as they grew themselves. The continued flow of people and simultaneous movements to the West had fullfilled the manifest destiny of the United States. During the latter half of the nineteenth century, the immigrants contributed heavily to the development of urban life and the progress of an industrial economy in America.
This emigration rush began when Europe discovered the great opportunities in America. It was related to the decline and fall of European feudalism, which gave impetus to emigration into the new world. Such tempo of emigration was accelerated by the new development in communication and transportation, compounded by religious prejudice, overpopulation and economic pressures in the old world. It was due to these push factors as well as the pulling forces of the attractive opportunities in the new world that made the migratory surge in the nineteenth century possible.
However, there were great apprehensions that America might be deluged with people from Europe, particularly by the Slavics and Semitics whose languages and heritages were somewhat alien to the Anglo-Saxon dominated Americans. Therefore, not only labor but the general public favored restriction and regulation of the flow of immigration, and the results were the successful legislations on the "literary test" in the 1910's and "Quota system" in the 1920's. Thereby, we saw a determined and successful movements to restrict the flow of immigrants to America.
