This study was crried out to establish the leachate characteristics and treatment efficiency in a leachate treatrment plant, and to evaluate organic removal characteristics and efficiencies using lab-scale biological treatment and Fenton's oxidation for treatment of the leachate from Kmunicipal waste landfill, so that the results could provide basic data useful for determining appropriate treatment options and for options and for operating the leachate treatment plant properly. The following results were obtained. The leachate was characterized by average COD and BOD of 1,907 ㎎/ℓand 533 ㎎/ℓ, and by average BOD /COD ratio of 0.28, representing high portion of non-biodegradable organic component and revealing gradual decreases of the BOD /COD ratio. The leachate also contained high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen and chlorides, affecting biological treatability of the leachate. The result from lab-scale experiment for activated sludge process showed that biological treatability tended to increase more or less as HRT increased and F/M ratio decreased, and, however, COD removal efficiency was very poor by showing 35% COD removal at HRT of 29 days. Optimum reaction conditions for Fenton's oxidation to treat the leachate containing COD between 2,000 ㎎/ℓand 3,000 ㎎/ℓincluded pH 3.5, 6 hours of reaction time, and hydrogen peroxide and ferric sulfatye concentrations of 2,000 to 3,000㎎/ℓeach with 1:1 weight ratio. Fenton's oxidation achieved more than 50% of COD removal under the optimum conditions. After treating the leachate by Fenton's oxidation, the BOD/COD ratio increased to 0.6 with tree-folds of the one for the raw leachate, and the organic strength reduction improved significantly during the activated sludge process by showing 48%, 51% and 95% removal for COD, COD and BOD respectively, as compared to the one pre-treated with alum.
