This thesis is designed to trace the origin of an Ideology of "A Hen Does Not Sing at the Crack of Dawn" and its transmission process in China and Korea and to consider its aspects of being embodied in saga novels. The ideology is one of the ideologies involved with women seen in old saga novels.
A phrase "A Hen Does Not Sing at the Crack of Dawn" is seen in Book of History, one of the Confucian classics. King Mu, king of the Zhou dynasty of ancient China, mentioned it when he conquered King Zhou, king of the Eun dynasty, saying it is said by old people. When King Mu first mentioned it, its meaning refers to that a husband should not follow what his wife says.
After that time it transmitted into three meanings in China; criticizing women's indirect participation in politics and warning against carnal pleasures, criticizing women's direct participation in politics, warning against a woman through an idea of dividing a woman and a man. The first case refers to that a king follows what a second wife says or a husband infatuated by his wife follows what she says. The second case refers to that an empress or a wife of king like Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang dynasty rules its country instead of a king. The third case refers to dividing a woman and a man and showing an idea evidently, which became a kind
of a theory. The first two are statements coming from experiences while the last one became a theory based on those experiences.
All of three cases were also transmitted into Korea from China. Among them, the second one that criticizing women's direct participation in politics is most strongly was supported. Queen Sondok, Queen Jindok, and Queen Jinsung of Shilla were mentioned as examples.
Saga novels coming out in late Chosun dynasty often have a phrase "A Hen Sings at the Crack of Dawn." It is often, especially, seen in Myonghangchungeurok and Yunhachungsammuncheurok. It is used in some situations as the following; when a wife tells her husband her knowledge or opinions, when a wife tries to control her husband, when a wife strongly asserts and participating in family events like a wedding ceremony. Sometimes a narrator or a man tells but a woman herself often tells. This is used in a different way but the phrase "A Hen Does Not Sing at the Crack of Dawn" is mentioned as a meaning that an empress expresses her opinions to a king or participates in politics herself. This is because the main settings of saga novels are not a palace but a home of the general gentry. And when it is thought
that women are the main readers of saga novels, women themselves state the theory dividing a woman and a man and bind themselves up. They internalize a woman-repressing ideology which men make and the situation of society that regards it right is reflected on novels.
Though the phrase "A Hen Does Not Sing at the Crack of Dawn" is not seen in saga novels, sometimes the situation reflecting its meaning is folded. These cases are following. Women participate in politics themselves or their voices expands and violates men’s area. These cases have been regarded as a very undesirable thing from long time and the idea is brought into relief and formed in saga novels.
There are many other woman-repressing ideologies seen in saga novels except "A Hen Does Not Sing at the Crack of Dawn." It is required that the origin and the transmission aspects of other ideologies are considered and how they are embodied in saga novels.
