This study examines the Chicano mural movement that was culminated in the 1970s, following the Civil Right movement. While focusing on the area in California, particularly in East LA where the earlier Chicano murals were intensively produced, I will explore the relation between the Chicano Civil Rights movement and murals, and the themes and issues of Chicano murals.
Chicano movement emphasized self-definition and pride that sparked a revision of standard histories and culture to include the previously ignored accomplishments of Chicanos. Chicanoism thus opens a new paradigm for Mexican-American culture, fighting against the idea of a “universal” culture and the notion of “the melting pot.”
Chicano murals were influenced by the Mexican murals that flourished in the 1920s post-revolutionary period. However, they were differed in many ways from the Mexican murals and from the 1930s New Deal murals in the US. In the earlier stage of Chicano muralism, it was not sponsored by a government, but grew out of the struggle by the Chicano people themselves. Support often came out of grass-roots sources and local business, or indirectly through social service and youth employment programs. While Mexican murals and New Deal murals were well funded and located in government or corporate buildings, these murals were painted in the barrios where Chicanos actually lived. Furthermore, these murals were produced in the process of cooperation with local residents. Particularly youth were encouraged to join the mural projects in discussing the content and often actually designing and painting murals.
The themes, designs, and styles are from diverse sources. Since Chicanos determined to no longer try to assimilate into Euro American culture, murals turned to the motifs of native-indian or Mexican heritage, and modern figures who contributed to the Chicano politics and culture. The religious icons such as the Virgin of Guadalupe and the symbols of police brutality and gang pride were also included. Furthermore, no one style cannot be pinned down: various styles such as realism, super-graphic and pop, and graffiti were employed. Vernacular, vulgar, and tasteless styles often found in Chicano murals and arts were defined as the sense of “Rasquachismo.” Such an aesthetic of workinglass sensibility was called for defiant stance to the accepted “superior” norms of the Anglo-American high art.
Meanwhile, Willie Herron and ASCO even probed the limit of Chicano themes and styles. By incorporating the street graffiti, Herron proposed not only a rethinking of graffiti as signifying vandalism but opened out the issue of alienation and violence within Chicano community rather than depicting romanticized community identity. ASCO's performing mural questioned the static form and themes of the traditional mural to reassess the uncritical use of traditional symbols.
Around since 1975, Chicano mural entered into the stage of institutionalization. Murals were viewed by government as an affordable means of urban beautification and constructive youth activity. Thus, more systematic mural projects were organized and professional mural artists were increased. However, the understanding of this phase cannot be achieved without understanding its historical roots and development. The Chicano muralism in the late 1960s and early 1970s instilled pride in many barrios that the mainstream culture had long dismissed. And Chicano murals opened an active cooperation between artists and non-artists. The emphasis of alliance of community, cultural and political identity, and diverse styles is viewed as a radical stance in contrast to the mainstream art world at that time.
