The Suguk-sa Temple has 6 Buddhist paintings created in 1907 and a Buddhist banner painting created in 1908, so a total of 7 Buddhist paintings. Although there are only 7 paintings, according to the record on the Amitabha Painting, 13 paintings were created together in 1907 including the Amitabha Painting, 16 Arhats Painting, Painting of Nine Levels of Paradise, The Ambrosia Painting, 2 Guardian Paintings, Painting of Hyeonwang, The Recluse Painting, Big Dipper Painting, Mountain God Painting, Kitchen God Painting, etc. These Buddhist paintings, which were created under the auspices of the royal family in the last period of the Joseon Dynasty, aimed at praying for the wellbeing and longevity of the King Gojong and Queen, Crown Prince and Princess, Prince Euichin and Princess, Prince Yeongchin, and display well the luxurious style of royal Buddhist paintings. The Buddhist paintings drawn on huge canvases represent Buddhist paintings from the late Joseon Dynasty in terms of scale, the dazzling use of gold powder, and outstanding style. From the iconographic aspect, the Buddhist paintings in the Suguk-sa Temple generally followed the patterns of icons observed in Buddhist paintings in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do created in the late 19th century, and this suggests that they inherited traditions in the transitional period. Of course, this characteristic is not unusual amongBuddhist paintings crated in the late 19th century in the Seoul and Gyeonggi‐do, but the establishment of the Suguk-sa Temple and the creation of the Buddhist paintings in the temple were rare large-scale Buddhist projects promoted by the royal family, and thus their influence is considered to have been enormous. The style of the Amitabha Painting, which divided its screen into two parts, top and
bottom, and depicted bodhisattvas and disciples on the top and the Four Deva Kings on the bottom, was adopted exactly as it was by the Amitabha Painting in Main hall of the Bulam-sa Temple, which was created a month later (1907), and the composition of Painting of Nine Levels of Paradise is the same as that of Painting of Nine Levels of Paradise popular in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do during the late 19th century and the early 20th century including Painting of Nine Levels of Paradise in the Heungcheon-sa Temple (1885), Painting of Nine Levels of Paradise in the Heungguk-sa Temple (late 19th century) and Painting of Nine Levels of Paradise in the Bongwon-sa Temple (1905). In addition, the 16 Arhat Painting, which shows screen splitting composition like Painting of Nine Levels of Paradise, followed the icons of the 16 Arhats Painting in the Bulam-sa Temple that was drafted by Gyeongseon Eungseok in 1897 and painted jointly by Boam Geungbeop, Beomhwa Yoonik, and extended a little in width Painting of Hyeonwang in the Bongwon-sa Temple created in 1905. Guardian Painting was also drawn after the icons of Guardian Painting of the Bulam-sa Temple created by Geungbeop Hyegwa, Bonggam, etc. in 1907. This work was also created to pray for the prosperity and longevity of the imperial family with the donation of Jae-hee Gang and Mun-hwan Gang. In this way, the Buddhist paintings in the Suguk-sa Temple were faithful to the Buddhist painting style popular in the areas of Seoul and Gyeonggi-do in those days, and added the gorgeousness and elaborateness of Buddhist paintings offered by the royal family. Another notable point in the Buddhist paintings in the Suguk-sa Temple is that they were created as a part of Buddhist projects promoted by Jae-hee Gang and his father Mun-hwan Gang, the most influential Buddhism sponsors in the late Joseon Dynasty. In the middle of the breathtaking political situation of the late Joseon Dynasty studded with the assassination of Empress Myeongseong in 1895, King Gojong’s flight to Russian Legation in 1896, the foundation of the Daehan Empire in 1897, the Protectorate Treaty in 1905, the Secret Envoy to Hague in 1907, etc., the foundation of the Suguk-sa Temp...
