In the history of painting of the Joseon period, the nineteenth century is often recorded as the time when genre paintings experienced a decline. Art historians have paid scarce attention to the nineteenth century anonymous genre paintings in the form of folding screens that were created among the common people. It is my understanding that these folding screens of genre paintings, generally designated as “a group of paintings of farming and weaving (耕織圖類),” are an extension of the tradition of the folding screens of the Illustrations of “Seventh Month” from the “Odes of Bin” (豳風七月圖), which were produced by the royal court since the early Joseon period. Further, the series of paintings depicting sesi pungsok (annual cyclical rituals) related to rice farming in chronological order beginning with Jeongwol Daeboreum (the fifteenth day of the New Year according to the lunar calendar) were referred to as folding screens of sesi pungsokdo paintings. Illustrations of “Seventh Month” from the “Odes of Bin” and sesi pungsokdo folding screens depicting the daily activities of farmers are the products of pictorial conventions closely associated with agricultural and annual cyclical rituals held for wishing good harvest.
Illustrations of “Seventh Month” from the “Odes of Bin,” reflecting the spirit of noncomplacency of the king, empathizing with the hard work and efforts of the people to make a living while staying alert against complacency, were utilized as didactic paintings which functioned as an important visual medium together with muildo (paintings based on the contents of Seogyeong Muilpyeon) and gyeongjikdo (paintings depicting daily activities related to farming) in the royal court of the Joseon Dynasty claiming to stand for rule by virtue. Meanwhile, the paintings further emphasized their association with the Illustrations of “Seventh Month” from the “Odes of Bin” by conducting Naenongjak (mimic farming) reproducing the image of natural objects and farming figures in the rear garden of the royal court. The shamanistic way of celebrating and wishing for a good harvest in the forthcoming year by creating three-dimensional structures embodying images associated with a good harvest including Naenongjank and Byeokkarittae (a pole for suspending grains wrapped with straws) was presumably naturally reflected in the paintings on folding screens depicting scenes of achieving a rich harvest in the fall through the great efforts of plowing and cultivating the lands by the farmers. In this way, the Illustrations of “Seventh Month” from the “Odes of Bin” and the sesi pungsokdo folding screens of the Joseon period were not just limited to their didactic function but were closely intertwined with the ritualistic function of praying for a prosperous year. It appears that the growing prevalence of sesi pungsokdo folding screens in the late-nineteenth century had more to do with the ritualistic function and the auspicious symbols embodied in these paintings.
