There are two kinds of systems regarding breathing tec hniques, more precisely mindfulness of breathing(Sanskrit, anapanasmrti; Pali, anapanasati), in Buddhist tradition: one is a system of 16 stages mindfulness of breathing found in the early Buddhist canons, and the other is that of 6 stages mindfulness of breathing introduced in An ban shou yi jing. While these two kinds are relatively well-known, the five stages of mindfulness of breathing in Sravakabhumi is not yet to be introduced. The purpose of this article is, before to exhaustive research on mindfulness of breathing, to make a presentation of this 5-stage-system propounded in Sravakabhumi. In earlier canons, mindfulness of breathing itself was regarded as a completed practice system which leads one to attain the status of Arhat. Even though relocated into the prerequisite stages in the highly systematized practical methods of Mainstream Buddhism, yet again, almost ignored in Mahayana Buddhism, it is still emphasized in a group of Dhyana sutras, such as An ban shou yi jing and etc. Mindfulness of breathing found in these Dhyana sutras is not based on the 16-stage-system in earlier tradition, but on the 6-stage model originated in the yogacaras in northwestern India. In the 6-stage-system of mindfulness of breathing appeared in Dhyana sutras, the first 3 stages, consisting of procedures such as, counting breaths, following up and fixation, are combined with the last 3 stages of the pats of supramudane, which indicates the observation on Five aggregates and the Four noble truths. Contrastingly, mindfulness of breathing in Sravakabhumi, based on the six-step model, though, proceeds to elaborate its unique 5-state system of mindfulness of breathing. In systematic aspects, mindfulness of breathing in Sravakabhumi successes the 6-stage system of Dhyana sutras and, at the same time, integrated the traditional 16-stage model. Thereafter, the 6 stages of mindfulness of breathing and that of traditional 16-stage model go beyond the level of being simply juxtaposed two separate systems, and become newly established as a sole system according to the stages of practice. The characteristic of mindfulness of breathing in Sravakabhumi are presented as follows: firstly, it highly sophisticated the breath-counting technique itself as a main method of attaining a samadhi state. In this manner, the 2nd and 3rd steps in the 6-stage model can be systematically leaped over. Next, it is interesting to notice that an individual method, namely adhimoksa (勝解, visualization), has been combined with mindfulness of breathing. There can be various reasons why Sravakabhumi positively evaluates visualization and integrates it into the other practical methods. I carefully suggests the influence of Mahayana notions as an aspect to be concerned. If so, mindfulness of breathing in Sravakabhumi might serve as a good example of decent materials in the field of researching on Mahayanization of traditional practical methods.
