The purpose of this paper is to introduce the formation and extinction of art of squats in paris and to reinterpret its feature in the notion of ’smooth space’ of Gilles Deleuze and Fξlix Guattari. Ultimately, this study tries to show how art of squats in Paris has dispersed and diversified the power of the art by opening a space of liberal expression and communication with the society as well as micro-politics for the artistes.
Deleuze and Guattari divide a space into two concepts - striated space and smooth space. The striated space is an organized and fixed place occupied by the sedentary while the smooth space is a flexible space with huge possibility of change occupied by the nomads. But il doesn’t mean that every space on the earth is divided into either striated or smooth space.
Neither it is fixed nor such two notions are in confrontation. Instead, according to Deleuze and Guattari, a space is recreated as it repeatedly changes itself from the striated type into smooth type and vice versa.
In the place of modern art, there is not so many places of smoothness.
However, the art of squats in Paris can be called as the most flexible and smooth spaces in the aspect of motility. Artistes illegally occupy the buildings that have been emptied for quite long time in the middle of the city. There, they create and exhibit their art. The squat is an attempt of the artists trying to find a space of creation to be set free from the commercial viability of the institutional art.
Of course, it is true that the art of squats in Paris is not usually long-term space of art due to its illegality. However, no matter how short it lasts, the density of the creation and enjoyment established there has huge influence on the art world of Paris. Among such squats, <La-Grange-aux-belles>, <Chez Robert>, and <Alternation> have influenced heavily the art world of Paris. There are quite suggestive in terms of modern art spaces as the artistes show a brand new type of art space by performing various art works such as the fine arts, music, and performance in the squats, which literally means ’illegal occupation’.
The mosaic work at <La Grange aux belles> is a good example of art space turning into a smooth space through the non-organic relation drawn by the body without organic. The artists exhibit their various expressions based on their personalities and when each work of them is seen as a patchwork, they are recreated as a unconventional and unique piece. The mosaic in the lobby of the first floor inside the building gave a new birth to the space. <Mosaic>, the piece of collaboration of the artists living here, followed patchwork technique in which the pieces are linked together as the artist creates his piece of work right next to the work done by another artist. As a result, this mosaic becomes a smooth space with grand scale, not a striated type of imprinting on the limited canvass. It is an example of shedding a typically striated wall and floor from its identity and then turning it into a smooth space of huge scale. <Chez Robert> has changed its appearance frequently. The identity of this place was expressed in various ways as many artistes collaborated and changed its exterior. It attracted many citizens and tourists since its freshness and dynamism could be seen whenever its exterior was changed. According to its varied exterior, the typical image of the striated space of a financier was changed into the image with various identities of smooth space. As the government ordered to tear down unlicensed structures, squat artistes keep negotiating with the city, Paris, through their spokesperson and media delivers such situation in detail to the citizens. As a result, Paris citizens are voicing out to keep art squats from being closed. This microscopic movement of Paris citizens played a role in changing policies of the city. Paris encouraged creation of artistes and secured space for exhibition and performance by purchasing ...
