Word of mouth (WOM) is the primary factor determining consumers’ purchasing and the most powerful form of marketing (Bauhin, Doogan & Vetvik, 2010). By spreading the word about their experiences with brands, products, or services, consumers influence others’ attitudes and behaviors. Acknowledging the important role of WOM, research on motivators driving consumers’ intention to participate in WOM activities have been studied considerably. Arguing that the motivation of WOM is mainly self-serving, Berger (2014) suggested five key functions of WOM in individual level: impression management, emotion regulation, information acquisition, social bonding and persuading others. In terms of self-serving purpose, WOM is quite related to personal characteristics. Identifying individuals with certain personalities that tend to be more willing to act as senders can be critical to the success of WOM (Sicilia, Delgado-Ballester & Palazon, 2015). Research on this subject have provided several characteristics related to WOM intention. They are, for example, extraversion (Mazzarol et al.,2007; Moisescu, Dan & Gica, 2021), narcissism and materialism (Moisescu, Dan & Gica, 2021), altruism (Mazzarol et al., 2007), high self-esteem (De Angelis et al., 2012), need for uniqueness (Clark & Goldsmith, 2005), and regulatory focus (Shin et al., 2014).
In the service industry, understanding consumer’s personality is more crucial because gaining a better knowledge of the role personality plays in the hospitality industry can help provide a better level of service (Leung & Law 2010). In this regard, more various consumer personalities need to be investigated. Recently, some attention has been paid to gender identity in consumption context (Ye et al., 2017). Gender identity refers to an individual’s personal sense of identity (Morrow & Messinger, 2006), and it is involved with a personality process (Tate, 2014). Today’s consumers enhance their defined gender identity through consumption and possessions, thereby expressing their gender identity (Avery 2012). In this regard, the role of gender identity has been explored by researchers, and they found it as a significant factor predicting consumer behaviors. The domains studied are extensive: i.e., brand images of cigarette (Vitz & Johns, 1965, Fry, 1971), purchasing decision on household (Qualls, 1987; Ke, 2021), Christmas gift shopping (Fischer & Arnold, 1990, 1994), attitudes toward advertising (Jaffe, 1991; Kempf et al., 1997; Hogg & Garrow, 2003; Sandhu, 2018; Weinberger et al., 2017), identity congruence (Feiereisen et al., 2009; Grohmann, 2009), brand perception (Ye et al., 2012), and gift behaviors (Palan et al., 2001; Weisfeld-Spolter et al., 2015).
Research related to gender has been generally focused on the role of biological sex, which is usually referred to gender (male and female) in recent consumption research. Meyers-research found that no difference between male and female were observed (i.e., Sun & Ham, 2021; Sun & Qu, 2011; Han & Ryu, 2009). According to gender similarity hypothesis (Hyde, 2005, 2014), cognitive function such as WOM recommendation is a goal driven behavior (Berger, 2014) that male and female show similar level. Rather, WOM might be related to gender identity. As noted above, personality is a predictor of WOM. Given that gender identity is a personality process, it is likely to affect WOM.
The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between gender identity and WOM. Based on the gender identity theory, in this study, we will examine the effect of gender identity on consumer behavior and develop hypotheses related to WOM. Based on the literature review, a causal model will be designed, we test it in the context of consumers using hospitality services. By examining the impact of gender identity on WOM, the result of this study will contribute to expanding the literature on gender identity and WOM. Furth
