This study examines the metaverse from the point of view of performance studies and, based on this, tries to look at the performance aesthetics of the metaverse by targeting overseas metaverse performances. First of all, in the first part of the main body, metaverse users, metaverse space, and time are approached from the perspective of performance research. The second part examines the performance aesthetics of overseas performances on the metaverse based on this. The British National Theater Company's Draw Me Close: A Memoir (2020), Avatar Artist LaTurbo Avedon's Your Progress Will Be Saved: Artist Tour with LaTurbo Avedon (2020), and ULTRAWORLD (2021) by Susanne Kennedy, were considered. The metaverse technology is currently in the process of development, and the metaverse performance is also evolving, so this discussion has an essay on metaverse performance. The performance aesthetics in the metaverse are as follows.
First, the appearance of an avatar as 'I am not me' and an actor who is a metahuman or digital twin, changes the way we do, see, and experience performance. The fragmented self of indeterminacy and duality, that is, a new aspect of an actor in which human-flesh and non-human-machine are mixed produces an experience in which the audience can confirm their alterity.
Second, the avatar's virtual body interacts with the user's real body. The avatar's body-image is essentially placed in a relationship with the user's actual body. The avatar's virtual body cannot be regarded as a fully digitized, de-embodied body. Rather, it becomes an intermediary between the computer screen and the actual body of the user. The moment of interaction between the user and the body of the avatar, which is traversed by my body, functions as an important factor in the occurrence of transformational events through the performance in the metaverse.
Third, the performance space on the metaverse implies a ‘heterotopia’ character. It produces a space that exists in reality but does not exist in reality. It is a world within the world, but it is a place without a place, and it is also a world outside the world. The space is psychedelic, ambiguous, instantaneous, personal, and context-dependent.
Fourth, the performance of the metaverse calls for a time of absence rather than presence. The metaverse performance embodies the absence of a performance, not a presence. Absence is not an emptiness or lack, but an emotional resonance, an extension, and an expectation of presence. If the aesthetics of avant-garde performance in the 20th century was based on the aesthetics of presence, the aesthetics of metaverse performance in the 21st century would be based on the aesthetics of absence.
It is necessary to interpret the performance aesthetic from a long-term perspective beyond the temporary interest sparked by the pandemic crisis concerning the performance on the metaverse. The discussion in this paper will have significance as a starting point.
Draw Me Close: A Memoir(2020), 아바타 아티스트 아베던(LaTurbo Avedon)의 Your Progress Will Be Saved: Artist Tour with LaTurbo Avedon(2020),
