From the beginning of the 21st century, there has been aggressive excavation and investigation on the remains of a Buddhist temple in Korea and China and thereby have been some fresh and new discoveries. These findings made it possible to deeply understand the structure of temple compound and wooden pagodas, and the transition of the placement styles of the central foundation stone of wooden pagodas and the dedication styles of reliquaries during ancient Japan in comparison with Ancient East Asia.
Except for Asuka Temple, one pagoda for a main building of a temple was a basic style of the temple compound in Japan until the first half of the 7th century, which reflects the similar situation during the time of the Northern and Southern dynasties~Tang dynasty, Baekje, and ancient Shilla..
In the mid-7th century when Tang dynasty was formed, the will of constructing a large scaled national Buddhist temple to protect their own country, including a nine-story wooden pagoda, spreaded through all over Ancient East Asia.
In addition, Horyu-Ji style of the big Buddhist temple of Baekje paved the way to creating Japan's unique style of temple compound for the first time.
When Japan was defeated in the Battle of Baekchoengang in the late 7th century, the national temples of original Yakushiji and Daikandaiji with twin pagoda styled-temple compound introduced from Unified Silla were built to guard the right and left sides of Fujiwara-kyō, a Chinese style castle town.
This style of city planning had continued to Yakushiji and Daian-ji of Heijokyo during the Nara period, but pagodas were gradually constructed outside of the center of a temple.
Moreover, with the introduction of esoteric Buddhism in the Heian era, statues of the Buddha were enshrined around the central pillar of a pagoda compared to the Mahavairocana, and the world of mandala was expressed.
From the late 11th century, when the idea of ending Dharma became prevailed, there appeared several temples where Medicine Buddha was laid in a pagoda and the thought of Ruriko Pure Land was manifested in response to Kondo representing the western paradise.
Accordingly, the style of pagodas suggests each country's unique and exclusive change in Ancient East Asia.
Next, let's turn to the building styles of the central foundation stone of the pagodas and dedication styles of reliquaries. The central pillars of the pagodas in the two temples built in Ye city of the Northern Qi dynasty were supported with semiunderground-type central foundation stones under which each Buddhist reliquary was enshrined. To identify whether the same situation could be found in Woongjin and early Sabi period of Baekje Dynasty or not is our important further task. The stone case to enshrine sarira found in Neungsanri temple site of the Sabi period had moved to the top side of underground-type central foundation stones(567) and a square-shaped sarira container in Wangheungsa temple was laid on the top side of the foundation stones, which was the first construction method in Ancient East. Furthermore, the method of penetrating a hole to put a square-shaped sarira container in the position of a central pillar must have affected the pagodas in Asuka temple of Japan(593).
Given that there remained lots of central foundation stones without sarira containers in the early-mid 7th century of Japan, there are many chances that the same way might exist besides Gunsuri temple site in Baekjae.
Meanwhile, in China, outermost devices to enshrine sarira underwent changes from stone cases to small brick rooms finally to large ones according to the shape of underground rooms for reliquaries of a pagoda. In the end of the 7th century, burial chamber typed-underground rooms started to appear and existed along with terrestrial rooms for a long time.
The terrestrial room for reliquaries of a pagoda wasn't transferred to Korea and Japan, but it seems to have expedited the construction of the room on the ground.
So, grou...
