This study selected 146 of 148 students attending the Dept. of Health Administration, K Health College in Kwangju, who responded to a questionnaire, in Nov. 13~17, 2000 and examined and analyzed reason to choose and enter the Dept. of Health Administration, the degree of satisfaction at school life, attitude to public health administratorship, and career perspective upon graduating.
1. Choosing the Dept. of Health Administration before entering
1) Most students chose their major suddenly just before college entrance exam. regardless of their goal, aptitude, and taste. The attention should give to motivation for academic achievement and special guidance and care for adapting t school life.
2) For advice on choosing a major self-choice accounted for 58.5% and others' advice, including parents, siblings, or friends for 31.5%, showing that choosing a major by others could cause unsatisfied subjects of study or school life.
3) For reason to choice a major, 33.6% was affected by passable results of college entrance exam and 27.4% by easiness to get a job. Considering that results of college entrance exam greatly influenced choosing a major, the focus of guidance should be on understanding students and planting a right view as a professional for public health administration in students' mind.
2. Choosing the Dept. of Health Adminstration after entering.
1) For the order of preference for this department, the first preference accounted for 70.5%. of them, 40.4% answered adapted well, but the rest indicated not know, trying or not adpat themselves. The findings showed that there was the difference between choosing a major as the first preference and actually adapting themselves.
2) For desire to change a course, 38.4% responded yes and 60.3% no. Aunsuitable aptitude was highest in reason, followed by the lack of social view, small ay, and difficult school work.
3) 19.2% responded they would choose the Dept. of Health Administration agin; 53.4% did not know and 25.3% would not choose again. For recommending this department for others, 76.0% did not want to oppose with those who want and 11.0% wanted to recommend willingly
3. The degree of satisfaction at school life
1) For school life, 50.5% answered good and 28.1% very satisfied or satisfied. Poor educational environment(school facilities) was highest 13.7% in the reason for unsatisfaction, followed by too heavy school schedule and social view of health administration.
2) For satisfaction at choosing this department, 56.2% answered good, 31.5% very, satisfied or satisfied, and 12.4% not satisfied or not very satisfied. Different curriculum to expectation was highest 12.3% in reason for unsatisfaction, followed by too heavy school work, disagreement between theory and practice, and inadequate practice order, showing that school should make efforts to promote students' skill and sincere personal relation in order to solve student's possible complaint or problem.
4. Attitude to public health administratorship
1) For self-consciousness of the level of public health administratorship, 53.4% responded similar and 21.2% higher than other jobs.
2) For social view of public health administration, 69.9% responded not so good; 21.9% good, and 7.4% bad.
3) For view of public health administratorship, 41.1% though that it required responsibility and originality as a health information officer and 34.2% that it did not establish its system and was subject to medicine. It suggest that all professions should cooperate with original authority and dignity and unique knowledge and skill.
5. Career perspective after graduating
1) Medical office was highest 62.3% in desired job after graduating, followed by customer affairs office 17.1% and pharmacy 3.4%.
2) For desired period, 43.8% wanted to hold a continuously and 41.1% wanted to have a job after marriage if possible. Considering that most want lifelong work, the emphasis should be on fostering ability to cope with radical society with specific and systematic plan.
3) 28.8% wanted t transfer to another college after graduating and 67.8% did not. Health adminstration was highest in desired department, followed by insurance and business adminstration. Effective academic guidance and counterplan should be considered for students who want to transfer to another college.
