In English the use of the get-passive construction has remained relatively unanalyzed. In the past, during the 19th and 20th centuries, most grammarians have tended to view the choice of get, rather than be. as the passive auxiliary as causing only a negligible difference in meaning and structure. On the other hand, other scholars (Curme 1931, Quirk. et. al. 1972) assert that the use of get in English passive constructions is 'vulgar and colloquial.' But, according to Visser (1963-73 : 2089), get as an auxiliary of the passive is well on its way towards the promotion from a colloquialism to a recognized element of Standard English.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the English get-passive construction. The first section is devoted to examining, diachronically, the get-passive. In Old English, there were two types of passive: weord-'-'become'-past participle, wes-/be- 'be'+past participle. The first type was a nomal use of the stative passive, but in the course of time it seemed to disappear. So the second one, in Modern English, has come t convey not only stative notion but also dynamic notion as in:
(I) The windows were broken.
'The windows were broken by someone' (dynamic notion)
'The windows were in a state of brokenness' (stative notion)
In order to distinguish between the dynamic reading and the stative reading, the get-passive which denotes the dynamic notion seems to have developed in Modern English. (Lightfoot 1979: 275 276).
The second section of the paper deals with the structure of the get-passive and divides it into four types: (a) the reflexive 'adversative' get-passive, (b) the non-reflexive 'adversative' get-passive, (c) the reflexive 'beneficial' get-passive and, (d) the non-reflexive 'beneficial' get-passive. In the final section, the meanings of each type are analyzed. The adversative passive conveys the 'adversity,' and the beneficial passive 'benefit' on the part of the subject as in:
(2) a. Jane got fired. Jane got herself fired. b. Jane got promoted. Jane got herself promoted.
The construction with a reflexive pronoun gives emphasis to the meaning of non-reflexive passive. But the verbs occurring in the get-passive cannot be divided into an 'adversative' set and a 'beneficial' set. The speakers' intentions, aided by the context, determine which of the two interpretations is appropriate.
(3) Jane got photographed dancing with prince Charles.
This sentence could either be construed as 'adversative' for the subject who doesn't like to be photographed, or 'beneficial' for the subject who is a socialite.
Finally, I want to state that this thesis refers chiefly to the works of Hatcher (1949), Visser (1963∼73), Hasegawa (1968), Lakoff (1971) and Chappell (1980).
