The Baekjado paintings, depicting a number of children playing in the gardens decorated with exotic rocks and trees, were considered as auspicious images. Therefore, the paintings were produced for royal weddings or decorations in the court wishing to have as many offspring as children drawn in the paintings. The ceremonial and decorative screen paintings began to spread widely to the common people in the late Joseon Dynasty and were largely produced at a certain period.
These Baekjado paintings, mainly produced in the 19th century, were mostly created in standing screen painting formats, The paintings are characterized by eight typical icons and were reproduced based on several kinds of drawing texts. The paintings are mostly drawn with eight typical scenes and the icons are composed of eight typical play activities: 'playing soldiers,' 'chicken fight,' 'picking lotus flower,' 'taking a nap and playing with birds,' 'catching butterflies,' 'public official's visit,' 'playing with a monkey,' and 'picking plum blossoms.'
The Baekjado of Private collection to be discussed in this article, deserves considerable attention because it not only represents formative characteristics of the Joseon Dynasty's Baekjado paintings, but also reflects several changes. The Baekjado, with the setting of royal palaces and showing different scenes in each panel, reflects a change in the typical eight-panel format, It is a ten-panel screen painting, excluding the 'playing soldiers' scene and adding three scenes of 'playing with cranes,' 'official's visit tiding a sheep,' and 'flying kites.'
The new scenes depict the same settings or elements borrowed from one panel of the entire Baekjado such as the shape of the buildings and the drawings of children in groups. In the crane scene, cranes replaced the monkey in the 'playing with a monkey' panel. In tile sheep scene, children are riding a sheep instead of a carriage in the 'public official's visit' panel where they pretend to be public servants on a visit, riding carriages. On the other hand, although some similarities are found in its basic composition of the scenes. in portraying the characters. and also in repetitive manner of applying the motifs, the 'flying kites' scene demonstrates new features in the playing activity and in the style of depicting the clouds and some other components.
Compared to other Baekjado paintings of the same format, this Baekjado of private collection lacks accuracy in depicting both the details of the icons and the overall composition, and the pigments used in me painting does not have high quality. Therefore, it can be assumed that the painting was produced at the stores selling screens or paper in the markets rather than at the court, Moreover, with the use of Western dark blue pigment and the shading shown on the roof tiles, the painting is considered to be created after the late 19th century. This painting did nor use some scenes from the typical Baekjado and increased the number of panels by changing and adding some scenes. Such characteristics along with the imperfect composition suggest the changes in Baekjado. As the demand for the Baekjado screen paintings was on the lise, the creating method gradually changed and differed from the drawing texts which the paintings used to rely on to serve its original purposes. It can be interred that different variations of Baekjado were produced, derailing from the typical formats and reflecting various needs and financial ability of me consumers, and the level of painters.
The Baekjado screen paintings were used for weddings or house decorations because they conveyed auspicious meanings. Thus, the eight panels of the late Joseon Dynasty Baekjado represented the productivity of male offsprings, longevity, wealth and rank, and especially success which included becoming a government official. The crane and sheep panels in the Baekjado of private collection still convey auspicious images such as longevi
