(Background and Purpose) As an integral part of China's artistic heritage, Calligraphy entails the aesthetic characteristics and values of calligraphic works, and delves into their materials, craftsmanship, and styles. With the advent of the 21st century, the fusion of traditional art and modern culture has become imperative. It highlights the significance of integrating traditional art with modern culture, particularly in the face of evolving technologies. This study aims to propose and verify the types and conceptual definitions of calligraphy aesthetic space through theoretical exploration of the relationship between calligraphy works and architectural space and the spatial terms and categorization names taught in calligraphy aesthetic theory. The primary objective is to illuminate the historical development and aesthetic values of calligraphy, emphasizing its potential to enhance architectural spaces, thereby creating novel values in both disciplines. (Methods) It begins with an analysis of calligraphic aesthetic theories, examining the interplay between calligraphers, their artworks, and viewers. This is followed by a survey involving eight experts, coupled with Principal Component Analysis (PCA), to objectively identify common elements between calligraphy aesthetics and architectural spaces. The tangible aspects of calligraphic aesthetics are then translated into spatial terms through Focus Group Interviews (FGI) with these experts. The study deduces various types of calligraphic aesthetic spaces and formulates their conceptual definitions. Finally, these space types are applied to Wang Shu's architectural designs for empirical validation. (Results) The PCA identifies key categories at the intersection of calligraphy and architecture: 'Form', 'Quality', 'Rhythm', 'Method', and 'Philosophy'. The FGI translates these into spatial terminologies: Spatial Form, Spatial Expression, Spatial Rhythm, Spatial Experience, and Spatial Cognition. Five distinct types of calligraphic aesthetic spaces emerge: 'Intuitive' space that fosters deep resonance; 'Static' space that emphasizes imagery and symbolism; 'Flowing' space that expresses suggestions and emotions; 'Dynamic' space that focuses on rhythm and vitality; and 'Integrative' space that highlights the interconnectedness of separate areas. These types are corroborated through case studies in architectural settings, which demonstrate their practical applicability. These spaces effectively embody calligraphic aesthetics and translate artistic elements into spatial dimensions by stimulating reflective and sensory engagement in visitors. (Conclusions) In conclusion, the study presents an innovative synthesis of calligraphy and architectural aesthetics. It introduces and validates the concept of 'Calligraphic aesthetic spaces', which are essentially the embodiment of calligraphic features in both internal & external space, and is a new space concept in which the aesthetic elements of calligraphy are converted into spatial elements to stimulate the appreciator's thoughts and reactions. This fusion offers new creative insights & values and bridges traditional and modern elements, which makes a valuable contribution to the evolving fields of calligraphy art and architectural space design.
