Ancient Tombs in Gyodong, Changnyeong region are composed of over 100 tombs around the foothills of the Hwawang Mountain, providing spectacular views. Gyodong Ancient Tombs are a large group of ancient tombs, equal to Jisandong Ancient Tombs from Dae-Gaya and Malisan Ancient Tombs from Ara-Gaya, and the characteristics of their polity have been discussed.
The mainstream view so far has been that this area was subjugated to Shilla between the late 4th century and the early 5th century, but some viewed that the area belonged to Gaya until the 5th and 6th centuries.
This study aimed to discuss Bihwa-Gaya that was based near Changnyeong from the perspective of the political structure of Gaya since the Year of Gyeongja (AD 400) recorded in the Gwanggaeto Stele in the early 5th century. That is, as Geumgwan-Gaya started to decline around this time and Ara-Gaya also temporarily declined, Bihwa-Gaya started to rise along with So-Gaya.
First, this study identified that the pottery from Changnyeong in the 5th century had the style of Gaya, and examined its historical implications.
In addition, the pottery produced in Changnyeong had been continuously imported to So-Gaya, Geumgwan-Gaya, the Dara Kingdom and Dae-Gaya, and the relations between Bihwa-Gaya and these countries were reviewed to discuss the political attribution and the development driver of Bihwa-Gaya.
This study also examined the historical background of relocating the center of Bihwa-Gaya from the Gyeseong district in the southern region to the Gyodo district in the northern region, and the political trends of Gaya and Shilla surrounding Bihwa-Gaya.
The influence of Shilla was observed in the style of the pottery excavated in areas including Daegu, Gyeongsan, Ulsan, Yangsan, and Busan in the early 5th century, but the Changnyeong-style pottery during the period was not at all similar to the Shilla-style pottery. It was also found that its unique style was well maintained even in the mid 5th century when Shilla started to influence the area.
Changnyeong was not subjugated to Shilla in the 5th century, which can be attributed to the topography of the area, and particularly high and rugged mountains in its bordering area with Shilla. In addition, its border was open to Gaya along the Nakdong River, which seemed to be also related. Due to these natural conditions, Shilla seemed to expand its territory into Changnyeong relatively late compared to other regions along the Nakdong River.
The pottery produced in Changnyeong was distributed across other areas including Hapcheon, Uiryeong, Gimhae, Changwon, and Tongyeong. This indicates that Bihwa-Gaya engaged in transit trade between Shilla and other countries including the Dara Kingdom on the other side of the Nakdong River, Geumgwan-Gaya in the downstream of the river, and So-Gaya in the southern coast, trading materials such as iron.
The pottery produced in Gaya in the early 5th century was found in So-Gaya and Bihwa-Gaya only, which indicates that Bihwa-Gaya was one of the leading powers among Gaya city-states during this period.
The center of Bihwa-Gaya was relocated from the Gyeseong district in the southern region to the Gyodo district in the northern region in the mid 5th century. This can be attributed to the decline of So-Gaya and the Dara Kingdom, the rise of Dae-Gaya as well as the influence of Shilla.
In the late 5th century, the style of the pottery in Changnyeong became extinct, and the pottery that used to be imported to different areas was no longer taken out. Its relation with the Dara Kingdom in Hapcheon, one of the major negotiating countries on the other side of the Nakdong River, was severed. This shows that Shilla did not influence Bihwa-Gaya until this period.
Bihwa-Gaya in Changnyeong was situated on the east side of the Nakdong River bordering with Dae-Gaya, the Dara Kingdom and Ara-Gaya, and its pottery style compromised the style of Shilla and Gaya. In addition, the accessories and swords o...
