Paul on Marriage and Celibacy
This study explores how Q 16:18 and its parallel passages (Matt. 5:32, I Cor. 7:10-11, Matt. 19:4=Mark 10:6) manifest political theological meanings of marriage/remarriage ethics in relation with the issues of celibacy ethics between Stoicism and Cynicism. First of all, for the sake of an advanced exegetical exploration of Q 16:17, this research not only reconstruct the trajectory of tradition history of the Jesus divorce logia, but also review how this reinterpretation, based on the ethical issue of marriage and celibacy, accomplishes our theological agenda of overcoming public injustice of inequality between man and woman in facing modern ethical dilemma of Christian divorce and remarriage. For this purpose, in contrast with Crossan’s and Mack’s Cynic interpretations of Q, this study not only appreciates Malherbe’s creative thesis that both Paul’s ministry style of self-sufficiency in Thessalonica and his preference to celibacy over marriage imitates Cynic ethics rather than Stoic ethics, but also displays Deming’s recent Cynic reinterpretation of Paul’s view of celibacy manifested in the selected texts (I Cor. Ch. 7), which is rendered as a creative upgrading of Malherbe’s thesis. In order to reinterpret Q 16:18 and other paralled texts in light Deming’s Cynic reinterpretation of I Cor. 7:10-11, it will remark especially how its related paralleled texts on celibacy (Mark 12:25, Matt. 19:10-12, I Cor 7:32b-35) raises the issue of celibacy for elaborating more radical view of marriage/remarriage ethics in light of political theological agenda of projecting new social vision of international cosmopolitan city. Especially, we also review how we can adumbrate political theological vision of public justice and equality by reinterprting Q 16:18 and its parallelled other passages in light of Deming’s recent exegetical work of I Cor. 7 based upon the Greco-Roman intellectual history of the issue of celibacy between Cynicism and Stoicism. Also, it briefly examines Q, Luke, Mark’s ethico-political standpoint by inquiring whether early Christian communities take an action of opposition against Roman and Jewish mode of marriage related with patriarchism. Then we explore whether the exegetical discussion about Jesus’ view of divorce prohibition in Q 16:18 and its paralled texts can be better explained in light of Stoics (Epictetus and Hierocles) or Cynics’s views (Cynic letters) of celibacy. By evaluating both theoretical work and exegetical work on Q 16:18 and its parallels, our critical review argues that it implicitly manifests the sophisticated social vision of radical justuce of revolutionary change of society, since most of these texts are designed to oppose to legitimating both Roman mode of patriarchism and imperialistic political ideology of domination. From the perspective of philosophical issue of celibacy between Cynicism and Stoicism, Jesus’ radical vision of revolutionary social equal love-union implied in divorce logia (Q 16:18) are proposed to create its own political vision of subverting Roman culture of adultery and Jewish patriarchical culture of marriage. It also claims that Luke’s literary context of Q 16:18 implicitly manifests its own political-theological mode of new social vision by creatively interconnecting three themes of new epocal rule of Kingdom of God (Q 16:16), effectiveness of Torah in new Era (Q 16:17), possession of our goods (Q 16:19-31). Especially, Q 16:18 also implies a political theological form of asceticism through love-union between God, husband and woman by suggesting new social ethics of equality and justice with regard to the issue of marriage/celibacy, as well as by proposing the political theological strategy of radically transforming both Jewish religion and Roman Empire’s imposed imperialistic ideology.
