This paper examines characteristics that are common to Ashokan statues from the Southern Dynasties of China and discusses the background to the development of such stylistic characteristics.
Ashokan statues are said to have been made by King Ashoka of India (ca. 304-232 BCE).
These statues were worshipped in China as auspicious figures(瑞像), over a long period, from the Northern and Southern Dynasties period to the Tang Dynasty. Many compilations of Ashokan statue-related ancient legends and stories of their supernatural power have survived in China, to this day. In recent years, two sculptures dating from the 6th century, bearing the inscription“King (A)shoka Statue,’have been discovered in Chengdu(成都) in Sichuan(四川) Province. Standing statues and statue heads in an identical style, dating from the same period, have been also discovered in large numbers, in Chengdu.
Interestingly, these Ashokan statues are very similar to each other in appearance. The robe covering both shoulders is quite short, baring the ankles, and garment folds, present in the upper and lower bodies, are in the shape of the letter U. All of them have a moustache, but their hair vary somewhat, as there are two different styles. Similar characteristics are, in fact, seen in Five Barbarians and Sixteen States-period Buddhist sculptures from the 4th century.
In other words, Ashokan statues could have been a fugu (returning to the ancients)-style Buddhist sculptures created in the 4th century. Meanwhile, the emergence of such fugu stylehas to do with the auspicious sign(祥瑞) Ashokan statues took on in the Southern Dynasties.
Unlike statues of King Udayana and other auspicious figures of Indian origin, Ashokan statues have no basis in Buddhist scriptures, and have never been discovered in India or in Central Asia. Also, up until the mid-6th century and before the Western Wei conquered Chengdu and Jiangling(江陵), Ashokan statues were neither made nor worshipped in the Northern Dynasties. The iconography of Ashokan statues was, therefore, created in the Southern Dynasties. As a matter of fact, these statues were only worshipped in the Southern Dynasties until the mid-6th century.
Ashokan statues of Southern Dynasties were in their nature close to a political sign serving to showcase the Southern Buddhist Dynasties’legitimacy and superiority to the Northern Dynasties which were dynasties founded by nomadic peoples from the north. The Ashokan statue housed in the Changgan Temple(長干寺) in Jiankang(建康), for example, was brought from the political center in the north, when the Southern Dynasties moved down southward.
For this reason, this statue was considered a memorabilia of the Southern Dynasties and the token of their Buddhist orthodoxy. Starting in the late 5th century, the fortunes of a state were increasingly linked, in China, to Buddhism. Emperor Wu(武帝) of the Liang dynasty was arguably the ruler who most effectively exploited this association for his political gains.
Emperor Wu actively used Ashokan pagodas and statues as symbols of legitimacy of his rule and orthodoxy of Southern Dynasties Buddhism, holding massive-scale Buddhist rites. It is thanks to this that the Ashokan statue cult eventually spread all the way to Sichuan. Ashokan statues made in Chengdu, therefore, appear to have been modeled on the Ashokan statue housed in the Changgan Temple.
In conclusion, the Ashokan statue of the Changgan Temple was a marker evidencing that the religious tradition of Buddhism continued from the Western Jin to the Southern Dynasties without interruption, serving important political purposes. Continuity, in the traditional Chinese belief system, equaled legitimacy and orthodoxy, and this was the reason why 6thcentury Ashokan statues of Chengdu had to be made in a fugu style, following the style of the 4th century.
