Chondrites provide direct information about early solar system. This information is preserved by primitive components such as chondrules and Refractory Inclusions (RIs): Ca-Al-rich Inclusions (CAIs) and Amoeboid Olivine Aggregates (AOAs). CAIs are the oldest dated solids in the solar nebular. AOAs are irregularly shaped inclusions made up mostly with olivines (a few μm). Chondrules are igneous objects composed of olivine, pyroxene, metal and mesostasis, formed a few million years after RIs. Though they might have experienced secondary alteration (Krot et al ., 2006), reduced CV chondrite (CVR) is known as one of the least altered groups having high abundances of RIs and chondrules that provide better chance to unravel relations among them.
Chondrites are isotopically heterogeneous, especially in oxygen. In three-oxygen-isotope plotting, i.e., δ17O vs δ18O, the deviation from terrestrial mass fractionation (TF) line is expressed as Δ17O. Primary components of CVs mostly have negative Δ17O values that fall on or near the Carbonaceous Chondrite Anhydrous Mineral (CCAM) line (Clayton, 1993): pristine RIs have the lowest value of Δ17O ≈ -25‰ and chondrules fall on high Δ17O (Δ17O ≥ -7‰). The hiatus is filled with isotopically modified RIs and relicts in chondrules, which allow us to find the genetic link between them. Among many textural types of chondrules, micro-porphyritic olivine (microPO) chondrules seem to be the most relict-abundant ones (e.g., Jones et al ., 2006).
We observed petrography, chemistry and O isotopes of olivine in a CVR, Thiel Mountains 07007 (TIL 07007). Typical porphyritic (P) chondrules contain large (> 100 μm) olivines and pyroxene, while microPO chondrules consist of ~30 μm equigranular olivines. We studied 4 microPOs with 3 Ps and 4 AOAs. In-situ O isotope measurements for olivine were carried out using a CAMECA IMS 1300-HR3 at KBSI. Two sets of conditions were used: (1) ~ 3 nA primary Cs beam with three-FCs excavating ~25 μm² craters with high precision (δ18O, δ17O as ± 0.2, ± 0.4 (2σ)) and (2) ~200 pA Cs with FC-EM-EM making ~7 μm² craters with lower precision (± 0.5, ± 0.8). Chemical compositions were analyzed by JEOL JXA-8530F FE-EMP at KOPRI.
O isotopes of olivine in AOAs and P chondrules are internally homogeneous. 4 AOAs are nearly identical (Δ17O ~-23‰) and 3 Ps are slightly different each other (-4.7, -5.6 and -6.3‰ in Δ17O). MicroPOs show large heterogeneity along CCMA line: from -23.8 to -4.7 ‰ in Δ17O. The degree of heterogeneity seems to be correlated with abundance of metal and mesostasis: the most heterogeneous microPO has the lowest abundance. Al-Ca-Ti zoning olivine grains, similar to those in Kaba, CV (Marrocchi et al ., 2019), were observed and exhibit a weak correlation with Δ17O. There is no relationship between Δ17O and spatial location within chondrule.
Several models including (1) interaction with a 16O-poor gas (Marrocchi et al ., 2019) and (2) relicts in chondrule (Jones et al ., 2004) are proposed to explain this remarkable O isotope heterogeneity. Texture and Al-Ca-Ti depletion coupled with 16O-enrichment in microPO of TIL 07007 indicate their inherent characteristics as AOA relicts. Based on no correlation between O isotopes and location in a chondrule, it"s not likely that melt-gas exchange works as a main mechanism for microPOs. The correlation between mineralogy and O isotopes also supports that O isotopic heterogeneity is mainly due to chondrule precursors not by incomplete exchange during chondrule formation heating event(s).
