Mass culture is a field that can be encountered easiest and most frequently in busy daily life by many people regardless social status or age. The purpose of this study is to examine how Buddhism has been utilizing mass culture in our history and hot it could take root in the public through ‘Muaega(無㝵歌)’ and ‘Muaemu (無㝵舞)’ of Great Master Wonhyo(元曉) of the period of the Three States that can be called the first public Buddhist music and ‘Hwesimgok(回心曲 or 悔心曲)’ that is still loved a lot in order to help the utilization method of mass culture as a medium for Buddhist education.
『Samgukyusa』 transfers a record that Muaega and Muaemu were made by Great Master Wonhyo after he watched clowns played and due to singing, dancing and educating based on the Avatamska Sutra, even poor and uneducated persons were informed of the name of Buddha. It is told that farming old persons of Goryeo Dynasty enjoyed a play that imitated Muaemu and in Joseon Dynasty, Muaemu was performed as a ceremonial dance in the Buddhist sanctum of the temple or settled down as a court dance and maintained its existence to the late Joseon Dynasty. The song was also transferred but due to the record of Goryeosa Akji(高麗史 樂志) that the lyrics includes words and dialects of Buddhism, it is not sure whether ‘Muaega’ made by Wonhyo has been transferred as it was and due to the difficult in the records of the early Joseon Dynasty, it seemed to have gradually disappeared.
Hwesimgok is a folk music loved by many people these days when Korean classical music is neglected. ‘Hwesim’ means devoting to a religion from a mental change due to a chance and the two types of ‘Hwesimga’ and ‘Hwesimgok’ have been transmitted until the late Joseon Dynasty and the Japanese colonial period. It is reported that Hwesimga was made by Buddhist Master Seosan(西山) and the contents as Buddhist Gasa(佛敎歌辭) focused this world and a paradise and has the purpose to recommend a prayer to Buddha and they are also faithful to the instructions of Buddha. On the other hand, Hwesimgok was song by professional singers in the public and it was composed in time order from the beginning of human birth to his death, entrance to the other world and the judgment of ten kings, and emphasizes parents' blessings and promotion of virtue and reproval of vice so that it has strong characteristics of a folk religion rather than Buddhism compared to Hwesimga.
The reason why Muaemu and Hwesimgok were informed to the public and transferred to the masses of people was that all could easily understand and follow them. In particular, Hwesimgok has been close to the public and consistently modernized its words and is composed of a type of storytelling so that in spite of no full understanding of a few words, people have no difficulties in understanding the whole context. It is considered that Buddha’s love to be with the public was the biggest motive to draw appropriate changes as well as understand the tastes and demands of the masses of people.
