다름과 다양성을 듣는 음악학: 아시아계 미국인 연구(Asian American studies)의 문화정체성 논의를 중심으로
= Musicology Listening to Difference and Diversity: Focusing on Cultural Identity in Asian American Studies
이 글은 아시안 아메리칸 연구(Asian American studies)의 이론과 연구 사례가 한국의 음악연구에 적용될 수 있는 가능성을 모색해보는 데 그 목적을 둔다. 아시안 아메리칸 연구는 민족 연구(ethnic studies)의 일환으로 전개되었던 것으로, 문화 동화주의를 근간으로 사회 단일화와 통합을 꾀하던 미국 사회에 문화 다원주의로 변화를 가져왔다. 가장 큰 변화 중 하나는 인종, 민족과 관련된 정체성 관련 개념이다. 그리고 이러한 변화는 아시안 아메리칸 연구의 성장과 함께 음악학에서의 정체성 연구에 중요한 학문적 틀이 되었다. 특별히 음악학에서 자주 다뤄지는 연구 관심사 중 하나가 정체성이라는 점에서 아시안 아메리칸 연구와 함께 음악학에서의 아시안 아메리칸 연구의 주요 쟁점을 탐색해보는 일은 한국 사회의 다양한 음악 현상을 분석하는 데에 이론적 토대가 될 것이다. 뿐만 아니라, 아시안 아메리칸 연구를 면밀히 살펴보는 일은 다문화 관련 논의에 균형 잡힌 관점과 태도를 제시해줄 수 있다. 이에 이 글은 먼저 아시안 아메리칸 연구가 시작될 수 있었던 배경을 토대로 이 연구 분야가 인종, 민족에 접근하는 방법을 살펴본다. 그리고 음악 학에서 이 개념들이 어떻게 적용되고 있는지를 볼 것이다
This article aims to examine theory and case studies of Asian American studies as a way to apply them to music scholarship in Korea. Asian American studies driven from ethnic studies have changed American society from the one pursuing social unity and consolidation, which was founded on the concept of cultural assimilation, to the one pursing multiculturalism. The most significant change is found in the concept of cultural identity associated with race and ethnicity. Also, this change has formed a framework for identity studies in music scholarship as Asian American studies grows. Particularly, as identity is one of the most frequently discussed in music studies, taking a look at critical issues in Asian American studies will provide a background as a way to examine various music related phenomenon. Furthermore, examining Asian American studies will offer balanced perspectives and stances for multicultural related issues in Korea. To do so, this article investigates the ways of how Asian American studies approaches to the concept of race and ethnicity based upon the historical background of Asian American studies. Furthermore, this article examines how those concepts have been applied to music studies.
