The growth of knowledge-intensive industries has heightened the importance of partnership networks. Manufacturers and suppliers can increase resources, experiences, and opportunities with access to a cooperative set of activities. Manufacturers can accomplish more innovative tasks they could not do individually by sharing knowledge with suppliers and many manu- facturers are now initiating partnership networks with preferred suppliers. In a knowledge economy, information sharing can become the locus of partnership networks, as the creation of knowledge is crucial to improving a competitive position. 37
Sharing information with other parties in a partnership network can be a source of an enhanced competitive advantage. Manufacturers that develop a broader bandwidth for communication are capable of transferring complementary knowledge assets. Supply network partners that exchange information effectively are able to work as a single entity. Together, they can better understand the needs of the end customer and respond to market changes quicker.
Information sharing in this study is defined as the degree to which each party discloses information that facilitates the competence and opportunities of the other parties. Information shared by organizations(manufacturers and suppliers) includes both the transfer of factual knowledge and the transfer of tacit knowledge. It has two different aspects in the level of quantity and quality that both influence innovation.
When confronted with a wide array of possible types of information sharing it is not prudent to assume that all should warrant equal treatment and managerial attention. In some instances, increased information sharing may be more costly than beneficial. Previous studies suggest that the consequences of information sharing can be both a benefit and a liability. Increased information sharing can also produce a strategic vulnerability. For suppliers, improper sharing can result in victimization by opportunists that leaves suppliers worse off than if they maintained larger numbers of more remote relationships.
Divergent interests and opportunistic behavior by partners affect information sharing. Previous research asserts that organizations engaging in information sharing practices have worries over the opportunistic behavior of partners for individual gain beyond the remit of the informant. There is also a built-in reluctance within organizations to give away more than the minimal information needed since information disclosure is perceived as a loss of power. Given these predispositions, guaranteeing the safeguarding of shared information becomes a critical aspect of effective information sharing.
Transaction cost economics (TCE) suggests that as suppliers in the network increase the investments in specialized assets then the transaction costs increase because the supplier must safeguard against the hazards of opportunism. An organization committed to a network will seek to protect interests by seeking evidence of a reciprocal commitment. The degree to which supplier not only invests in specific assets but also shares sensitive information are interpreted as signaling a willingness to commit to the network. A sizable sensitive-information disclosure of the supplier, thus, may cause the manufacturer not only to reassess the relationship value, but also to commit to the long-term relationship with the supplier.
The supplier perceiving the vulnerability due to higher relation-specific assets wants to inform the manufacturer of a willingness to cooperate for mutual benefits and will signal the disclosure of proprietary information. This study theorizes a positive relationship between the asset specificity of a supplier and information disclosure of a supplier (Hypothesis 1).
A supplier will be more open to share confidential information with the manufacturer if the supplier is guaranteed that the manufacturer will not behave opportunistically. Increased component dependence...
