An important question in research concerning Japanese Asuka 飛鳥 Period and Korean Three Kingdoms Buddhist sculpture is its relation to sculpture from China’s Southern Dynasties, as well as to that of the Sui 隋 and early Tang 唐. So far, research utilizing historical records and archaeological findings has led to a particular awareness of the connection to Southern Dynasties Buddhist images. However, there are a limited number of extant examples of Southern Dynasties Buddhist sculpture, just as there are many difficulties to the study of the relationship of ancient Japanese and Korean Buddhist sculpture. The goals of the present essay are, first, to draw from new discoveries and the results of research in recent years to concretely understand as far as possible the image production of the Southern Dynasties and especially that of the Liang 梁 Dynasty. Second, by comparing the production of images in the Southern Dynasties with examples from Shandong 山東, the Korean Peninsula, and Japan, to consider the forms of dissemination through which Southern Dynasties images passed to other regions, or alternatively to use examples from these regions to cast a light back on the images of the Southern Dynasties.
1. The Contours of Southern Dynasties Buddhist Sculpture
1-1. Qixiashan Grottoes and Xinchang Great Buddha Temple’s Thousand Buddhas Cliff
The Qixiashan 棲霞山 Grottoes, on the outskirts of Nanjing 南京, are rock-cut caves constructed during the Southern Dynasties, but which saw additional repair work from the middle of the Ming 明 through the Republican Period. As a result, their original appearance cannot be surmised from their present condition. However, owing to repairs that have been carried out to remove much of the mortar that has covered up the surface, as many as 15 caves constructed during the Southern Dynasties have been identified. Many of the statues’ heads have been lost, and the surface has been damaged either by human intervention or through weathering. Nonetheless, their value as Southern Dynasties statues has been further validated.
Two sources provide a likely Qi 齊 or late fifth century explanation for the completion of one of the Qixiashan Grottoes caves, Cave 19, the so-called Great Buddha Cave. These are the two anthologies Memorial Tablet for the Qixia Temple at She Mountain in Jinling (C. Jinling Sheshan Qixiasi Bei 金陵摂山棲霞寺碑) by Jiang Zong 江総 (519-594), and the Memorial Tablet for Ming Zhengjun (C. Sheshan Qixiasi Ming-zhengjun Bei摂山棲霞寺明徴君碑) by Gaozong 高宗 from Shangyuan 上元 3 (676). However, the text of the Jiang Zong inscription is actually a re-inscription dating to the first year of Kangding 康定 (1040), and the Ming Zhengjun inscription was inscribed almost 200 years after the initial construction period, and so these are not necessarily reliable sources. Instead, according to an entry from the Liang Dynasty monk Sengyou’s 僧祐 compilation A Collection of Records on the Emanation of the Chinese Tripitaka (C. Chusanzang jiji 出三蔵記集) from Tianjian 天監 14 (515), the Liang Prince of Linchuan’s (Linchuan Wang臨川王; younger brother to Emperor Wu of Liang 梁武帝) description suggests a high likelihood that construction was initiated around Tianjian 11 (512).
Repairs in recent years have led to the discovery of an inscription dating from Zhongdatong中大通2 (530) in Cave 28. Also, a comparison of the style of Buddhist images in caves 20, 22, 24, and 26 with images excavated from Chengdu 成都 in Sichuan四川 Province that bear inscriptions dating between the Qi and Liang Dynasties shows that they resemble examples of Liang images from between the latter half of the Tianjian Era (502-519) through the Zhongdatong Era (529-534). In other words, Southern Dynasties images from the Qixiashan Grottoes should be viewed as images from the period of Emperor Wu of Liang.
Another Southern Dynasties cave site, the Thousand Buddhas Cliff at Xinchang’s 新昌 Great Buddha Temple in Zhejiang 浙江 Province, is also of great interest. According to documentary evidence, construction of the temple’s Maitreya Great Buddha (J. Miroku Daibutsu弥勒大仏) was begun during the Jianwu 建武 Era (494-497) of the Qi Dynasty and completed around Tianjian 15 of the Liang. Because of the application of mortar for repairs, the original appearance cannot be studied, but the original forms of other sculpture at the Thousand Buddhas Cliff can still be observed. There are no documents that verify a construction date of the Thousand Buddhas Cliff, but my personal opinion is that they seem to be of the Liang Dynasty. In the center of Cave 1 is a cross-legged seated image with legs pendant, flanked on both sides by thousand Buddhas motifs buttressed on each end by images of the two guardian deities. Although advanced abrasion and repair work have affected the images, there are portions where the original forms can be identified. The very well preserved guardian deities resemble images of guardian deities inscribed with the date of Putong 普通 6 (525) excavated from Chengdu. In the center of Cave 2 is a seated Buddha with 34 Buddhas in two levels above and below on its left and right, portraying altogether 35 Buddhas. The head of the central image is a later addition and its body has seen advanced abrasion, but the shape retained in its draping skirt (J. mokake 裳懸け) as well as the Boshan 博山 censer and Chinese lions seen below resemble examples of sandstone Buddha triads from the Shanghai Museum with inscriptions dating to the first year of Zhongdatong 中大同 (546) and from the Liang Dynasty. The Thousand Buddhas Cliff statues exhibit defining characteristics of Southern Dynasties sculpture, even while being of a particular Liang production that is both independent and mutually complementary.
