This study aims to examine the change in the symbol-system of the Baekje(百濟) crowns by focusing on the change in decorations and patterns on the crowns. The geumje boyo (the gold quivering ornaments) excavated from early Baekje stone tombs in Seokchon-dong is regarded as a decoration on a Baekje crown. The origin of the crown decorated with the boyo can be traced to the crown of the queen excavated from Tillya-tepe in Afghanistan. The boyo was later applied to the crowns of Murongbu or Moyongbu(慕容部), Jougwan(鳥羽冠, headwear of the men of the Goguryeo kingdom), and the Baekje crowns. I think that the Baekje crowns were shaped into a conical-form (弁) and the rim of the crown was decorated with the gold bird-feather-shaped boyo. The ornaments reflected the traditional ideas about trees and birds. The geumje boyo gwan (the gold crown with the boyo) first appeared to be used as the king`s coronet during the reign of King Goi(古爾王) of Baekje before the middle of the 4th century at the latest, in order to distinguish the king from influential politicians. A dragon motif started to be used as a main pattern on a crown in the late 4th century, for example the gilt-bronze crown excavated from the Suchon-ri(水村里) tomb No.1. The dragon motif continued to be used as the main design, for example the gold crown found in the Suchon-ri tomb No.4. In the middle of the 5th century, a turtle-shell motif was decorated on crowns along with the dragon motif and phoenix motif. This change can be found on the gilt-bronze crown excavated in Bujang-ri, Seosan. Also, there were gilt-bronze crowns decorated with a cloud motif during the same period of time, for example the crown found in the tomb in An-dong, Gildu-ri, Goheung, the crown in the Leeum Museum, and the crown in the Gyeongju National Museum donated by Dr Yi Yang-seon. All the above-mentioned motifs can be considered symbols of dignity and authority. Between the two motifs, however, the dragon motif would hold a higher rank and the cloud motif would hold a lower rank. After Baekje moved its capital to Ungjin, the Baekje crown started to feature a dragon-and-cloud motif combining the two motifs, for example the gilt-bronze crown excavated from the Ipjeom-ri tomb No.1. The dragon motif was no longer used and the use of the cloud motif declined. And a lotus-flower motif appeared for the first time on the crown. The crowns gradually became to feature Buddhist motifs. The crown ornaments excavated from the tomb of King Muryeong has a lotus-flower motif and palm-leaf motif, which shows that the Buddhist designs were completely established as the symbol-system in the Baekje crowns. After Baekje moved its capital to Sabi, silver ornaments of coronets used by aristocrats became simpler. Consequently the symbol-system in the crowns changed from the motifs representing secular symbols to the Buddhist motifs expressing higher thoughts such as a spiritual view of the world during the Ungjin period and Sabi period, This change would be influenced by the growth of Buddhism in the Baekje kingdom.
