After closing of Platonic Academy in Athen by the Emperor Justinian in 527 A.D., Neoplatonists of Alexandrian school as Ammonios, Olympiodoros, Elias, David, Stephanos published philosophical textbook respectively, Prolegomena Philosophiae, containing various definitions and divisions inherited from ancient Greek philosophers, especially from three 'divine' philosophers as Pythagoras, Plato, and Aristotle. Among such textbooks, David's one is the best in logical and systematic description of the textbook. He arranged all traditional various definitions of philosophy into six definitions according to subjects, aims, superiority and etymology of philosophy, as the followings: according to its subjects, knowledge of existence as such and knowledge of divine and human things; according to its aims, contemplation of death and becoming similar to God as far as it is humanly possible; according to superiority, the art of arts and the science of sciences; lastly, according to its etymology, love of wisdom. However, there is still remained another definition, which is probably the last, most important one among all definitions, that is, perfection of soul. This seventh definition is a kind of teleological definitions of the philosophy beside contemplation of death and becoming similar to God. The perfection of human soul can be divided concretely into two aspects or directions: the purification of soul and the development of soul. According to its final definition, philosophy can heal the disease of the human soul on the one hand, and beautify it on the other hand. In these cases, philosophy is therapeutics(cura animae) or medicine of soul(animi medicina), and cosmetic and adornment(adornatio et cultura animae) of it. The idea of philosophy as perfection of human soul can be found primarily in Platon's dialogue, in which Socrates enters the stage as a true doctor to treat and to cure the souls of Athenian people. Platon's view of philosophy as cure of soul and development of soul had been inherited to later ages through medieval times in two courses, eastward and westward. Which definition of the both had been accepted more, depend on mostly whether any thinker is religious or not, then whether he belongs to west or east, and lastly whether he follows Platon's philosophy or Aristotle's thought. Generally speaking, if anyone is a religious thinker, or belongs to east, or follows Platon's philosophy, he probably hold fast to the definition of philosophy as cure of soul. In contrast, if anyone is a non-religious philosopher, or belongs to west, or follows Aristotle's thought, he perhaps accepts the definition of philosophy as development of soul. To former belong Neoplatonists, Byzantine orthodox thinkers, islamic philosophers as Al-Kindi and Al-Razi, and western christian thinkers as Augustine, to latter correspond Cicero and western humanists, Persian philosopher Paulus Persa, Syrian scholars Severus and Michael Bādōqā, and Arab logician Ibn Bihrīz. The slight difference of understanding on teleological concepts of philosophy played so important role in west and east that they go in different ways in areas of scholarship, religion, culture and civilization. As result, philosophy is combined with religion and even changed into religion in eastern christian world as well as in Islamic world, whereas, in west, philosophy is separated from religious practice and reduced merely to rational system or sensitive empiricism Moreover, in the religious tradition of philosophy as cure of soul are monastic asceticism and mysticism developed, in contrast to it, logics and humanities in the general tradition of it as development of soul. Therefore, the concept of philosophia as cura animae made mystic-religious culture with pessimistic worldview, contemplation and exercise of death, and ideal of the becoming similar to God mostly in the religion and in the eastern world, while the definition of it as cultura animae published humanistic culture to achieve perfection of human soul in various ways with optimistic worldview in the academic area and in the western world.
