Large number of literary collections of Buddhist monks were published during late-Joseon period. These collections usually have a preface written by contemporary Confucian scholars. These collections were continuously published and evenly throughout late-Joseon period. Among those prefaces, much mention about Buddhism and Buddhists directly, having similar contents. The fact that similar opinions about Buddhism and Buddhist is uniformly recorded throughout late-Joseon period, may be seen as the result of the general viewpoint of the contemporary Confucian scholars toward Buddhism and Buddhists.
Circumstances of Buddhist community during late-Joseon period were double-sided with these two movements happening simultaneously. First, oppressive policies against Buddhism which were launched with the foundation of Joseon state were in progress.
Second, with increasing number of Buddhist monks who could read and write classical Chinese, personal communication among Confucian scholars and Buddhist monks were active and widespread.
Amidst such circumstances, opinions of Confucian scholars about Buddhism and Buddhist recorded in those prefaces are as following.
First, they downgrade Buddhism as a teaching which negates Confucian morality, absorbed in nihil and annihilation. From this viewpoint, they thought of Buddhism as an object of one-sided criticism and expulsion, not something to be researched or talked about. Second, in the cases when the monk personally practiced Confucian virtues such as a loyalty toward the king or filial piety toward his parents, they praise the monk as “outwardly Buddhist but inwardly Confucian.” This is fundamentally denying Buddhist values and approving Confucian values only. Moreover, some of the Confucian scholars speak of blasphemous comments toward Buddhism as they lament the monks to have become a part of Buddhist community. Therefore, Confucian scholars of late-Joseon period only approved of the verity and existence of Confucianism but did not tolerate the existence of another thoughts or teachings. Thus they looked upon Buddhism and Buddhists from the extremely exclusive stance of this absolute Confucianism.
Viewpoint of these Confucian scholars towards Buddhism were fundamentally originated from exclusive consciousness toward heresy which was gradually reinforced through the development of Confucianism, beginning from thoughts of Mencius, then passed down to Dong Zhongshu, Han Yu, culminating in the foundation of Neo-Confucianism. However, the fact that Buddhist community oppressed by secular powers could not stand against but transformed itself as nationalistic Confucian Buddhism promoting Confucian values such as a loyalty toward the king may be another element which fostered such viewpoint.
In short, the Confucian scholars of late-Joseon period did not only downgrade and expel Buddhism from the aspects of politics, economy, and society, but denied to approve of Buddhism as an independent tradition of thinking from their deepest level of conscience. This may be concluded that in the basis of this viewpoint there was absolute Confucian paradigm which advocate that all men should be Confucian and nothing else.
