The chemical composition of a soil depends on rocks (minerals), and consequently, the soil contains many of the chemical components of its parent rock. Soils with different parent rocks are different from each other in chemical and organic composition, and plants rely on nutrients from the soils. In this way, vegetation distribution is greatly influenced by the chemical components of parental rocks as well as external conditions, such as climatic zone, latitude, altitude, geographical location and the presence of sunlight. This study looked regions and targets that provide sufficient data and information to understand the correlation between geology and vegetation. There have been no national studies on the correlation between geology and vegetation in the nation, however there are studies on the forest type, vegetation distribution, soil composition, numerical geological and numerical topographic maps of the Baekdudaegan protected area, which enabled this study to investigate the correlation between geology and vegetation from a macroscopic perspective. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to find out the relationship between vegetation and geological composition of the Baekdudaegan area even if the correlation is not clear or it is difficult to precisely delineate such a relationship. Thus, this study took into account physical conditions, such as altitude, latitude, direction and the material properties of the soil, to learn about the relationship between geological composition (rock, soil) and vegetation (forest type map, vegetation map) for the Baekdudaegan area. It turned out that specific plants were dominant in the forest floor and vegetation unit spaces depending on geological features. In particular, the limestone areas of the Baekdudaegan showed that calcifuge could serve as an obstacle to plant species moving due to Baekdudaegan climatic changes affecting geological characteristics. Thus, adaptation and preservation measures considering geological are necessary. On the other hand, the U.K. and the U.S. take into account the relationship between geology and plants when formulating their policies on protected areas as well as, making predictions on certain species, purifying the soil using functional plants, and utilizing growth characteristics commercially. In conclusion, Korea needs to reflect the importance of geology and biodiversity in our natural environment conservation policies and measures. In many cases, geological maps do not correspond to actual geological structures and lithofacies, and they often fail to reflect actual rock types due to disturbances of colluvial soil and soil movements. Therefore interdisciplinary cooperation and collaboration to survey geology-vegetation correlations are needed to overcome academic gaps in the fields of geology and botany.
