This article purports to examine how Tsong kha pa (1357~1419), through the text of the Lam rim chen mo, defined meditative concentration (samādhi, sānmèi 三昧), so called calm-abiding and meditative insight (śamatha- vipaśyanā, zhǐguān 止觀), and the unification meditation between calm-abiding and meditative insight (śamatha-vipaśyanā-yuganaddha-vāhin, zhǐguānshuāngyùn 止觀 雙運). In addition, I explore how Tsong kha pa explained the meditative concentration of direct encounter with the buddhas of the present (pratyutpanna-buddha-saṃmukhāvasthitasamādhi, pánzhōu sānmèi 般舟三昧), which can be achieved by the body of the tathāgata as the object of concentration. In the second chapter, I suggest two possibilities that are derived from the original terms from Chinese. As a response to Mie Ishikawa (石川 美惠)’s mention that the meaning of the word “ting nge” is obscure in his commentarial translation of the sGra sbyor bam po gnyis pa (二卷本譯語 釋), while the word “samādhi is usually translated into the word ting nge 'dzin.” One point is that it is possible to clarify the influence of the term ‘dìng’(定) and the other is the possibility of usage from the Intensivpartikel that can be explained within the Tibetan grammar. In addition, I examine that the concept of unification between calm-abiding and meditative insight that can be achieved for the practitioner to be awakened based on the practice of tranquility. In the chapter three, I introduce that Tsong kha pa emphasizes the practice focused on the body of the tathāgata, which is the most excellent practice for practitioners. The practice was emphasized by Tsong kha pa after he explained the four objects of meditation: the Śrāvaka-bhūmi. In addition, I explain the different understandings between Lúshān Huìyuǎn (廬山 慧遠, 334∼417) and Tsong kha pa on the samādhi in which the Buddhas of the ten directions are seen as clearly as the stars at night. For achieving the Samādhi, in which the Buddhas of the ten directions are seen as clearly as the stars at night, Tsong kha pa introduced that the practitioner has to progressively utilize the picture or the practitioner should rely on the teaching of the master. Moreover, he emphasized the vivid visualization of the Buddha, as if the Buddha appears in front of the practitioner’s eyes, beyond a platitudinous visualization. In addition, he mentioned that the practitioner cannot meditate by directly seeing pictures of the Buddha. For instance, the meditative concentration can be only achieved through, not by sense organs, but by the images appearing in the mind of the practitioner. This type of doctrine is not a peculiar meditative method for Tsong kha pa, but is the heritage from the teaching of Ye shes sde, a translator monk in Tibetan Buddhism and Kamalaśīla (ca. 740∼795 A. D.)’s the Bhāvanākrama succeeded the Pratyutpanna-buddhasaṃmukhāvasthita- samādhi-sūtra (Bānzhōusānmèijīng 般舟三昧經) and the Samādhi-rāja-sūtra (Sānmèiwángjīng 三昧王經) in the early scriptures of the Mahāyāna tradition.
