Recent studies have shown that shared multisensory experiences between self and other can influence the mental representation of one’s face as well as the conceptual and social dimensions of self–other relations. These shared multisensory experiences may lead one individual to assimilate features of another person’s face into the mental representation of their own face, making them feeling closer to the other person. The present study investigated whether self-evaluation can be altered in subjects with normal self-esteem (Experiment 1) and with low self-esteem (Experiment 2) following synchronous multisensory stimulation with beauty-morphed faces. This study also elucidated the neural correlates of implicit self-evaluation changes following multisensory integration processes (Experiment 3).
The effect of multisensory integration on change in self-other evaluation was measured both in subjects with low self-esteem and with normal self-esteem, because positive or negative feedback can be interpreted differently depending on the levels of self-esteem. In the visuo-tactile multisensory stimulation, participants were stroked on their faces while they viewed morphed faces being touched synchronously or asynchronously. The implicit association test (IAT) was used to measure change of self-other evaluation following multisensory integration. In the IAT, total IAT effect score was divided into two IAT effects, IAT for self-evaluation and IAT for other-evaluation, to measure the effects of multisensory integration on changes in self- or other-evaluation individually. Because physical attractiveness is closely related to self-evaluation, beauty-morphed faces containing 50% of a subject’s face and 50% of a face rated as beautiful were used as the other face during the multisensory stimulation process.
Experiment 1 suggested that merging the self with attractive faces after the multisensory integration process could change the process of implicit evaluation regarding other negatively. Synchronous tactile stimulation while watching a beauty-morphed face being touched strengthens the relationship between other and negative attributes, and weakens the relationship between other and positive attributes as measured by IAT. However, synchronous tactile stimulation while watching a standard-morphed face being touched did not affect RTs, indicating that synchronous multisensory stimulation did not affect subjects’ self-evaluations. These results suggested that subjects might enhance or at least maintain their self-evaluation indirectly by devaluating others’ positive attributes in the case of merging processes with beauty-morphed faces.
In Experiment 2, subjects with low self-esteem experienced a negative change in self-evaluation after watching the beauty-morphed face being touched during synchronous tactile stimulation. Synchronous tactile stimulation while watching a beauty-morphed face being touched strengthens the relationship between self and negative attributes, and weakens the relationship between self and positive attributes as measured by IAT.
In experiment 3, the difference in the N400 amplitude between the congruent and incongruent conditions after synchronous multisensory stimulation was larger than the amplitude difference after asynchronous multisensory stimulation. This result suggests that the changes in the differences of N400 amplitudes between the conditions can serve as an index of conflict in the self-evaluation processes, which increases during the synchronous stimulation condition.
The main results of the three experiments in this study were that (1) synchronous tactile stimulation while watching a beauty-morphed face being touched induced negative change in other evaluation in subjects with normal self-esteem, (2) subjects with low self-esteem only experienced a negative change in self-evaluation after watching the beauty-morphed face being touched with synchronous tactile stimulation. (3) Changes in magnitude of N400 activity can serve as the neural correlates of implicit self-other evaluation or conflict processes in the self-other evaluation IAT response during the synchronous multisensory experiences. In summary, this study shows behavioral differences in implicit self-other evaluation changes induced by visuo-tactile multisensory integration between subjects with normal and low self-esteems. N400 ERP component could be neural correlates of implicit self-other evaluation changes induced by visuo-tactile multisensory integration.
