The Revegetation of riparian areas plays a crucial role in the recently discussed 4 Grand River Project, the improvement of water quality in rivers, the restoration of aqua-ecosystems and the establishment of riparian eco-belts. However, restoration efforts on acquired land have not made significant achievements due to limitations arising from partial acquisition of land and restoration not considering the ecological features of riparian areas. Above all, Revegetation did not consider regional features and ended up only as landscape planting without changes in topographical and hydrological conditions. This study aimed to fix these problems and develop a desirable riparian Revegetation model for the Han River riparian areas.
To this end, acquired land in the entire Han River riparian areas was surveyed and analyzed. Then, within Bukhan River system where land was acquired intensively, an area around Samhoe-ri, Cheongpyeong-myeon, Gapyeong-gun was selected as a study site. Land around the Samhoe-ri area was acquired intensively and features the same weather environment due to geographical connectivity.
Five sites restored in 2005 and 2006 were set as revegetation sites. Then, the current status and problems of riparian areas were analyzed to generate basic elements. In order to build an ideal model, three sites, including natural riparian areas and riverine wetlands, were selected as reference sites. Then, along the Han River, two spots with sound nature were selected as modified sites.
For sites selected as revegetation sites and reference sites, ecological base environment such as topography and soil as well as vegetation and flora were surveyed and analyzed. Quadrats were set to survey vegetation.
The survey and analysis of five revegetation sites showed that plantation patterns were uniform and planted tree species were not growing adequately. This may be attribu표 to species selection that did not consider the topography, soil and vegetation of sites. It also may be because only vegetation was restored without restoring ecological base environment such as topography and soil. In addition, for natural succession, artificial maintenance should be kept to minimum after planting. However, the area was mowed regularly for weeding, which hinders the growth of species that are moving in from surrounding natural vegetation. Therefore, the absence of ecological base environment and appropriate planting techniques along with regular maintenance seemed to deter the swift riparian Revegetation in riparian areas.
In order to address these problems and build an ideal riparian vegetation model, five reference sites and modifier sites were surveyed in detail and preceding studies and theories on ecological planting models were reviewed to suggest riparian revegetation techniques for ecological restoration of riparian areas and natural succession of vegetation communities.
As for riparian revegetation elements, following were generated.
1) Among steps for ecological restoration such as securing structural stability, creation of a restoration base, vegetation introduction and ecosystem restoration and habitat creation (Koo Bon-hak, 2005), creation of a restoration base and vegetation were set as elements.
2) A restoration base is based on hydrological and topographical formation process and chemical and biological features (USDA, 2001). In this study, based on topographical formation process, topography, soil and hydrology were set. (Patton, 1992; Admiraal et al., 1997; Mun Seok-ki, etc. 1998)
3) As for vegetation introduction, selection of tree species and community formation considering the ecological function of riparian vegetation (USDA, 2001; Kim Kwi-gon, Cho Dong-gil, 2004; Koo Bon-hak, 2005) were selected.
In addition, for the ecological restoration of riparian vegetation, the restoration of topography and the improvement of soil, which were not considered in the past, were suggested as following.
1) Create a variety of slopes from gentle slopes to steep slopes (results of measuring reference sites and modifier sites; Koo Bon-hak, 2009)
2) For regular topography and narrow streams such as brooks, include slopes of 1:3-1:5 (Moon Seok-ki, etc. 1998; Kim Kwi-gon, Cho Dong-gil, 2004; River Design Standards, 2009)
3) For small-scale man-made wetlands to promote biodiversity, include slopes of 1:10-1:20 (Koo Bon-hak, 2009)
Soil organic concentration for ecological restoration was set at 3% by incorporating Lee Soo-wook (1981), Moon Seok-ki (1998) and soil survey results of reference sites in this study.
Regarding a riparian revegetation model, a vegetation standard model was proposed according to 衫山惠一(1992), 奧田重俊, etc. (1996), USDA(2001), Lee Yul-kyung (2005), Kim Jong-won (2006) and Han River System Management Committee (2007).
As for a riparian revegetation model, in consideration of the establishment of riparian eco-belts and vegetation structure of natural forests, a structure of aquatic ecosystems-ecotone-land ecosystems was pursued horizontally. For aquatic ecosystems, hydrophyte communities were suggested, while hygrophyte communities and edge communites for ecotone and ecotone and forest communities for land ecosystems. Vertically, a multi-layer structure was suggested. In addition, as for the dominant species of target vegetation, Quercus aliena (white oak) and Quercus acutissima (sawtooth oak) were selected as target species. They are suitable to Samhoe-ri, Cheongpyeong-myeon, Gapyeong-gun, show good growth among species introduced in current restoration sites, and are dominant in reference habitats and suitable to Korea's central region.
As aquatic ecosystems, hydrophyte communities were selected.
A hydrophyte community planting model introduces hydrophytes in a section between low water level and average water level to provide habitats to wild animals such as aquatic animals and amphibians and perform functions like pollutant reduction and migration paths. To this end, given that it is directly related to water, it was suggested to introduce two-meter-tall sub-forest tree of Salix chaenomeloides Kimura and Korean willow limitedly but plant them alternately in two rows with three plants in every 10 meters. As for 1.5-meter-tall shrubs of pussy willow and Salix purpurea var. japonica, it was proposed to plant them alternately in two rows with three plants in every 5 meters. In the case of hydrophytes and herbal plants, 4-6 plants will be planted in a unit area to provide habitat and erosion adjustment functions.
As for transition area planting model, hygrophyte and edge communities were set.
In the ecotone planting model, hygrophyte and edge communities were selected.
A hygrophyte community planting model was assigned with a function as a transition area connecting hydrophyte communities in aquatic ecosystems and edge communities in land ecosystems. Hygrophyte communities will perform functions such as erosion prevention, wild animal habitats, water purification and migration paths as VFS functions. To this end, as for two-meter-tall sub-forest trees of Fraxinus rhynchophylla Hance, alder, Salix chaenomeloides Kimura, Korean willow, it was suggested to plant 25 trees in 10m x 10m quadrats. For 1.5-meter-tall shrubs of Styrax japonicus Siebold & Zucc.,, pussy willow and Salix purpurea var. japonica, it was proposed to plant 25 trees in 5m x 5m quadrats. For herbal plants, six plants were suggested per unit area.
In the edge planting model, tree species are planted densely to assure the migration of wild animals, one of main functions of riparian eco-belts, and improve the scenic beauty when viewed from man-made roads. In addition, in order to protect inside the forest from various pollutants, a distribution of ecotone community species was proposed partly. To this end, it was proposed to plant 75 trees of six species within a unit area of 3m x 10m. When planting shrubs, shortstalk bushclover and lace shrub were planted in a density of 4 trees/1㎡, while Chinese sweetleaf, privet, autumn elaeagnus, baby rose were planted in 2 trees/1㎡.
As for land ecosystem planting model, ecotone and forest communities were selected.
The ecotone plantation model is a transition zone of riparian areas. It was set as a space dominated by oaks and willows as shown in the survey of reference sites. To this end, 10 white oaks were introduced within 100㎡ in the forest layer. Then, in sub-forest tree layer, Salix chaenomeloides Kimura, Styrax japonicus Siebold & Zucc., Sargent cherry, bird cherry, Korean willow, alder, Fraxinus rhynchophylla Hance and zelkova were used to plant 40 trees of eight species. As for the size of trees, small forest trees of 1.5 meters were proposed. Along with hygrophilic species such as Salix chaenomeloides Kimura, Korean willow, alder, Fraxinus rhynchophylla Hance and Styrax japonicus Siebold & Zucc., dry & humid species, including Sargent cherry, bird cherry and zelkova were planted. In shrubs, three species - baby rose, autumn elaeagnus and privet - were used to plant 200 trees in the entire area. In conclusion, a total of 250 trees were planted in the entire unit area.
In the forest community planting model, Quercus acutissima(sawtooth oak) and Quercus aliena(white oak) were selected as target species for inside the forest. First of all, sawtooth oak is one of species introduced most among oaks in the current restoration area and their growth status is not bad. Therefore, as for vegetation inside the forest, 25 three-meter-tall sawtooth oaks were planted within an area of 10m x 10m to create a forest dominated by sawtooth oaks. For sub-forest tree layer, 1.5m-tall trees were used and 40 trees of five species - elm tree, Manchurian fullmoon maple, Sargent cherry, Chinese sweetleaf and Japanese spice bush - were planted. In the shrub, assemble planting was suggested for 185 trees from four species, including privet, Japanese beautyberry, autumn elaeagnus and shortstalk bushclover.
The white oak community, a target species of another forest community, is a dominant species in the Reference Site 1, a natural forest, along with oriental cork oak. It is a species mentioned most in the forest succession of the central region. For the restoration of this community, white oaks were set as the main forest tree layer within 10m x 10m and 25 three-meter-tall trees were planted within 100㎡. As for species accompanying white oak riparian vegetation, 25 trees from six species - sawtooth oak, zelkova, Sargent cherry, Styrax japonicus Siebold & Zucc., Sorbus alnifolia and bird cherry - were planted in sub-forest tree layer. In the shrub, five species, including shortstalk bushclover, autumn elaeagnus, baby rose, Chinese sweetleaf and privet were used to plant 200 trees in 100㎡.
Each model is expected to form riparian vegetation in riparian areas after 10 years and perform various functions, including the migration of wild animals and water purification. The edge, ecotone and forest communities are likely to become similar to natural state after 3~5 years, 5~10 years, and about 20 years, respectively, and perform their functions properly.
This study is about a riparian Revegetation model focusing on the Han River riparian areas. In order to assure connectivity to vegetation in surrounding natural forests, it was proposed that target community species should be diverse. In conclusion, among models suggested in this study, a forest community planting model has limitations as it can be applied only when vegetation in surrounding natural forests are white oak and sawtooth oak communities. Therefore, follow-up studies should develop models for various vegetation communities. In addition, it is judged that swift restoration effects and ecological succession should be promoted through Revegetation along with ecological maintenance.
