The purpose of this study is to develop a mindful movement meditation program and verify its effectiveness by applying it to middle-aged women.
In Study 1, the mindful movement meditation program was developed and its content and construct validity were established by focus group and expert panel review. The Sussman's six steps were applied to secure validity as a development model, indicating planning, prior research and field observation, topic and goal setting, preliminary program composition, validity establishment, preliminary research, and revision and supplementation. The program stage is composed of body, mind, feelings, and objects based on the structure of Satipaṭṭhāna (四念處; four foundations of mindfulness) practice of the Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta (大念處經). Through literature review, five themes were extracted, which are the core principles of relaxation, attention, awareness, acceptance, and gaining insight. The goal to achieve the core themes was set as body awareness, emotion awareness, and emotion regulation related to the improvement of physical and psychological regulation. Through the in-depth interview, the appropriateness of the program's content and structure was confirmed. In addition, in order to conduct this study, somatic movements were used as a means of mindfulness. Halprin's body-part centered movement ritual and mindfulness yoga were employed, and the 8-week mindfulness movement meditation program was composed by referring to Feldenkrais' body awareness technique.
In Study 2, the program was administered to middle-aged women for improving somatic psychology for 8 weeks, and its effectiveness was examined. For the analyses, independent sample t-test, mixed ANOVA, and covariate analysis (ANCOVA) were performed for body awareness, emotion awareness, and emotion regulation according to time (pretest, posttest, and follow-up test). As a result, first, compared to the control group, the experimental group showed significant differences in body awareness and its sub-factors (sensory awareness, mind-body connection awareness, sensory return, trust) in both pretest-posttest interaction and posttest-follow up test interaction. Second, experimental group showed significant differences in the emotion awareness and its sub-factors (clear recognition of emotion) in pretest-posttest interaction. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in emotion regulation and its sub-factors. These results were also found through the participants' sharing of feelings that environmental and psychological factors influenced the study results due to the combination of the timing of this program related to emotion regulation and social distancing caused by the spread of COVID-19. Furthermore, although it did not appear in the quantitative methods, the experimental reports from participants revealed that the program's positive impact on emotion regulation.
In conclusion, the findings from these two studies together(study1 and study2) suggest that the mindful movement meditation program helps to improve physical and psychological regulation by increasing body awareness and emotion awareness of middle-aged women. In this study, the differences between the original program and the program for the COVID-19 pandemic were discussed, and a follow-up study was proposed. This study contributes the theoretical and practical extension of somatic movement focusing on body parts to the mindfulness movement meditation
