The failure and fire of the PV system were caused by environmental influences and maintenance problems, and the PCS failure rate was the highest among the components. The causes of failure were the overheating of PCS and deterioration of electrical insulation due to abnormal temperature rise of ambient temperature and components.
The abnormal temperature rise is kept below the manufacturer's design temperature of each component, but in the events of overload and short circuit, an abnormal current is applied to the circuit, causing damage to the components and insulation breakdown, resulting in an open or short circuit.
Overheating and deterioration of electrical insulation may persist due to design errors of devices and components and an increase in ambient temperature associated with hot weather. When durability increases together with these factors, the degree of component deterioration intensifies and this will eventually incur component failure and fire.
In order to improve the failure and fire safety of PCS and to maintain stable operation, thermal data that can determine the normal and abnormal temperature of the components and the system that can monitor PCS in real-time by applying this thermal data should be developed.
For developing the monitoring system efficiently, this study analyzed failure mode by using the FMEA technique and identified components detected with abnormal temperature by investigating the thermal characteristics of the PCS components over a year and assessing the priority order of failure modes. The critical components are DC capacitor, discharge resistor, IGBT, DSP board. Based on the manufacturer 's design temperature, detailed evaluation criteria for new and renewable energy facilities and reference documents, these components have stable operating temperatures of 60 ℃, 130 ℃, and 55 ℃ and optimal sensor locations, respectively.
In addition, this study changed the existing PCS design for the development of the monitoring system, and developed hardware and real-time monitoring device that can efficiently control PCS by attaching the sensors of critical components and cooling fan, which is an output device, to the left and right sides of PCS top.
The newly developed monitoring system has monitored temperature at all times, controlled abnormal temperature and alarmed abnormal signals for the critical components of PCS. Moreover, this monitoring system compared the temperature characteristics of each component before and after applying the system for stable operation and performance verification of PCS.
In the comparative analysis of ambient temperature, relative humidity, gradient solar radiation and daily average wind velocity of 5 days on the clear days of July, August, and September after application of the developed monitering system to the PV system, the power generation increased and the optimum condition of PCS maintaining the stable temperature of the critical components was confirmed as a result of performance improvement. The annual power generation decreased with the increase in the number of years of operation, and the cause for the reduction is presumed to be the deterioration of the electric characteristics due to aging deterioration and aging of the solar cells.
After applying the monitoring system, it was confirmed that the performance improved in comparison with the power generation increase and the monthly power generation, and it was proven that the temperature of the critical components of the PCS affects the performance and the optimum power generation is outputted by maintaining the temperature suggested in the reference document.
The monitoring system developed in this study is expected to allow safety managers to fulfill systematic maintenance and will contribute to prolongation of life span of PCS, and to failure reduction and fire prevention of PCS, and to the enhancement of PV system performance.
