The manufacturing industry has undergone significant transformations in recent years due to advancements in technology and the adoption of Industry 4.0 concepts. The emergence of smart factories, which are highly automated and data-driven, has revolutionized traditional manufacturing processes by offering improved productivity, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. Despite the potential benefits of smart factories for manufacturing performance and sustainable manufacturing, still, the adoption of smart factories technologies is slow because there is limited empirical research that examines the impact of smart factories technologies on manufacturing performance and sustainable manufacturing globally as well as in the context of Korean manufacturing firms which are an important industrial sector in the global market. Moreover, the role of government intervention in promoting smart factory adoption has not been fully explored. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of smart factory technologies on sustainable manufacturing and performance, while considering the moderating role of the Korean government intervention.
This study seeks to investigate the moderating influence of government intervention in Korea and Pakistan on the relationship between smart factory technologies, sustainable manufacturing, and manufacturing performance. The research is motivated by the desire to gain a deeper understanding of the factors that contribute to sustainable manufacturing in both countries. By conducting a comparative analysis, this study aims to provide insights into the differences and similarities between Korea and Pakistan in terms of their approach to sustainable manufacturing. Government policies and regulations can incentivize companies to invest in smart manufacturing technologies and implement sustainable practices. For data collection, we consider production managers from each company participating in the survey questionnaire form Korea and Pakistan, thus, one production manager is representative of one firm. Based on this result, the Korean government is more active to participate in implementation the smart factory, but the contribution of Pakistan government is still slow and limited. This study guides the government can provide financial support for companies that invest in smart factory technologies and provide training programs for employees to improve their skills in operating and maintaining these technologies. The government can also work with industry associations and universities to develop and promote best practices in smart factory adoption.
