Jeoksung-Lee(female, 1458 ~ 1538) was a wife of Han, Sook who was the 15th descendent of the Chungju-Han family. Her excavation was dug out from Gwangju. This study was focused on the process of repair, preservation and reproduction of Jeogori among the finds. Jangheung-Im ( 1590's, presemption)'s excavation was known to be the only woman's garment at Gwangju provence. However, there is a debate because the finds were consisted of man's garments such as remex shaped Jeogori, four-pieced pants and Cheolik, and misnomer problem. There were only 2 woman's garments excavated from Chollanamdo provence. One is Gyeongju-Lee (presumptive fe -male, ·-1684)'s from Yongam, and the other is Seonsan-Kim (1753 ~ 1827)'s from Haenam. Jeokseong-Lee's excavations are the only woman garments excavated from Chollanamdo provence, which are certain for the date, representative of early Joseon Dynasty.
Jeogori is a name of upper garment. It is shorter than coats and adjusts to right side. It consists of collar, gusset, long sleeves, and sometimes neckband, and breast-tie. The oldest name of Jeogori was Wehae(위해:尉解, in Chinese character). It was called Yoo(유:·) · Sam(삼:衫) · Euisapo(의사포:衣似袍) before the era of the three Kingdoms.
A term of 'Jeogori' was initially noted on the literature as 「...紅段子赤古理..」in september 13th 1420, the second year of king Sejong's reign. There were also pictures of long Jeogori in 『Akhakguebeom(樂學軌範)』, and documents in several royal records and anthology.
With literature review, I tried to find the name of Jeogori types. In the authentic record of Joseon dynasty (朝鮮王朝實錄), the name of upper garments were Kwadu(과두:··) · Jeogori(저고리:赤古里) · Sama(삼아:衫兒) · Dangeui(당의:唐衣) · Dangsam(당삼:唐衫) · Gyubgyukeum(겹격음:·隔音) · Kwaneui(관의:串衣) · Hosu(호수:好袖) · Jeoksam(적삼:赤衫) · Hansam(한삼:汗衫) · Heohung(허흉:虛胸). Kwadu(과두:··) · Gyubgyukeum(겹격음:·隔音) · Heohung(허흉:虛胸) were shown before the Japanese Invasion in the year of Imjin (1592). On the other side, Dangeui(당의:唐衣) · Dangsam(당삼:唐衫) · Kwaneui(관의:串衣) were noted after the invasion. Kwadu(과두:··) and Heohung(허흉:虛胸) were used to only man's upper garment. 『Garedogamuigwe(嘉禮都監儀軌)』 mentioned single-layered, double layered and cotton-layered Jeogori according to the sewing method and composition. Queen Euin, Queen Inmok's 『Binjeondogamuigwe(懿仁王后 · 仁穆王后 殯殿都監儀軌)』 showed most diverse names of Jeogori as follows; Jangdangeui(장당의:長唐衣), Sokwaneui(소관의:小串衣), Dangkwaneui(당관의:唐串衣), Gyunmaji(견마지:肩·只), Aekmaji(액마지:腋·只), Jeokgori(저고리:赤古里), Hwaijang-Jeogori(회장저고리:回粧赤古里), So-Jeogori(소저고리:小赤古里), Jang-Jeogori(장저고리:長赤古里), Jeoksam(적삼:赤衫), So-Jeoksam(소적삼:小赤衫), Dan-Jeoksam(단적삼:單赤衫), Hansam(한삼:汗衫), Jang-Hansam(장한삼:長汗衫), So-Han sam(소한삼:小汗衫), Dang-Hansam(당한삼:唐汗衫), Janggoeui(장고의:長古衣).
Jeoksung-Lee's finds were excavated from Songha-dong, Nam-gu, Gwangju. There were 28 clothes among 36 finds. The garments were either single-layered or lined clothes. A Dandanryeong made of cloud pattern fabric (雲紋絲 單團領) was present and was a characteristic of female jeogori in early Joseon Dynasty. It had round shaped inner and outer coat collars and knot button, but no embroidered insignia on the breast and the back of an official robe and no breast-tie.
The sleeve band and hem of the long Jeogori was handled by eyebrow-shaped end. The lower part was torn. There were 10 skirts, 5 lined one and 5 single-layed. Three of 5 lined skirts showed folding and 2 of 5 single-layed skirts had folding. The widest fold were measured 4 cm in height.
A single-layed coat-like cloth with opposite-neckband showed long length as a usual coat and half-length sleeve like a single-layered Danryeong (團領). It had a narrow, opposite-faced neckband, and gusset was folded similar to Jeju-Go (1560-1600 conclusions)'s unlined summer jacket.
There were 7 long Jeogori and the length were about 80cm. They had wooden-board-neckband, and made of cotton or silk which gave the feeling of simplicity. A long-length Jeogori decorated with lotus-flower pattern, which was the only one having pattern, and the 3rd jeogori among 6 lined, long Jeogori showed folding. It was not clear that the role of folding was whether decorative or functional. Thus, it is necessary to find the significance of the folding.
Two medium-length Jeogori were 70cm or so in length. They had a wooden-board-neckband and side opening. Their outer and inner neckband were parallel with a gusset. One of the medium-length Jeogori had no side opening and the outer neckband was set in and the inner neckband was set out.
There was single unlined summer jacket and its neckband was set in. Various sewing technique of early Joseon Dynasty such as double hemming and folded stitch (Yetssamsol), double stitch with in-side-out (Tongsol), basic stitch, hemming and folded stitch were noted in this summer jacket.
A short Jeogori (No.12) was a gravecloth confirmed by photographs. Solid black spot was remained after washing. it has a ring of thread and breast-tie. The rest 4 subjects might be underwear considering with the location of neckband and no decoration on them.
Floss (雪綿子) was present within the inside of the lined clothes (lined Jeogori, long hood formerly worn by women, lined skirt), which was similar to thin korean paper. The breast-ties of Jeoksung-Lee's Jeogori were removed artifically in all except No.10 Jeogori, and only two outside breast-ties were remained. It is traditionally said that breast-tie of graveclothes were not be removed and those of coffin stuffing were removed. In addition, vestiges of a inside breast-tie were not found, which meant that women's jeogori of 16th century didn't have a inside breast-tie.
In conclusion, Jeoksung-Lee's Jeogoris were certain for the date and showed the characteristics of woman's Jeogori in early Joseon Dynasty, and consistent with other woman's Jeogori in same era.
