This paper presents an investigation into the entire creative process of her dance performance「Me, Natasha, and A White Donkey」. Its purpose is to examine closely the procedures and processes of the poetic text of Baekseok's 「Me, Natasha, and A White Donkey」 being converted into dance language and created into a dance performance. After reviewing previous studies on dance performances based on texts, the investigator found out that few studies investigated the creative process to figure out how poems were created into dance movements. The research began based on a need to recognize that a process was as important for its research value as a creative product. As for methodology, literature study was combined with practice-based research. The research proceeded ception → practice and choreography → performance on the stage → analysis of performance.
Literature study covered the life and poetry of Baekseok and found six characteristics in his poems. The poet wrote poems in a colloquial and narrative style and used folksy poetic words, sensory words, emotional adjectives, postpositions, noun phrases, and narration in a colloquial form as his original expressive methods. Taking advantage of his own linguistic colors and style features, he created sensual poems even in daily language. The investigator made an inquiry into his poem 「Me, Natasha, and A White Donkey」, understood its poetic meanings in four characteristics including emotional adjectives, sensory words, postpositions, and noun phrases, and examined which elements could be converted into dance.
The practice-based research covered the entire creative process of the dance performance 「Me, Natasha, and A White Donkey」 from conception to the stage. At the conception stage, the investigator set her intention for choreography and a topic for her performance 「Me, Natasha, and A White Donkey」 based on the four characteristics of the poem 「Me, Natasha, and A White Donkey」. At the practice and choreography stage, the investigator created a specific dance language based on the understanding and interpretation of the original poem and used it to create her choreography and dance performance. Five ballet specialists that worked as a dancer and choreographer for ten years or longer participated in the stage along with the investigator. This process gave birth to the following dance language: first, the emotional adjectives and sensory words of the original poem were created into a dance language to express the speaker's feelings and emotional states. The textures of movements were formed to display heaviness and unstable lightness in a complex way; second, the postpositions that were used in a stylistically strange way in the original poem were created into a dance language to express conflicting elements. Changes to breathing due to postpositions caused changes to the rhythms and patterns of movements; third, the noun phrases used in the original poem, ‘~것이다’ and ‘~이다’ were created into a dance language to reflect the emotion of conviction inside the speaker. Passive and heavy movements expressing inner feelings were converted into active and light ones; and finally, the characteristics of the colloquial form in the original poem were applied to the style of choreography and the composition of the performance. The dancers made the original poem a part of themselves, thus converting their own senses and emotions into their unique dance language. Their dances were organized in an enumeration form, showing the aesthetics of free weaving and folding.
The present study made an approach to poetry in a linguistic aspect and proposed a new method of choreography to create poetic words implying poetic meanings into sensual movements, thus holding its significance. The dancers took the initiative in the creative process through talks and discussions, and their creative experiences as a community will propose a new model for creative education for the fusion of poetry and dance for common people as well as dance experts and specialists.
The study is significant in that it made an independent and sensuous inquiry into the meanings of poetry in a creative process and created individual emotions and inspirations into a unique dance language. The method of choreography and operation tried in the study will hopefully serve as a case in the creation of poetry into a dance text. The study will thus become a small stepping stone in the expanded scope of new methods of choreography and dance practice researches.
