The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the circumstances surrounding the return of the Jewish exiles(the Golah community) and their subsequent resettlement in the land of Canaan with view to identifying major factors behind the success of this resettlement project. The present study proposes prioritizing ‘internal’ factors over ‘external’ factors such as the influences of the Persian Empire. To back up this proposal, the study pays particular attention to the dynamic potentials within the Jewish community itself, in contra-distinction to the ‘Persian hypothesis’ which explains the formation of the Golah community mostly as the result of the Emperial colonial policies designed primarily for the imperial interests of the Empire itself.
The present thesis puts forward two major theses. First, the internal factors should be more seriously taken into account over the external facrors in understanding the successful settlement of the Golah community; the influence of Persia alone cannot adequately explain how the Golah community succeeded in reclaiming the land of ancient Israel and its history as described in the post-exilic texts of the Old Testament. Thus the study puts more emphasis on those internal dynamics such as its social capabilities, its self-consciousness as a religious community, and the strong prophetic traditions it held on to.
Second, more than anything else, it is the far-reaching importance of the religious traditions that contributed to the success of the resettlement. The Babylonian exiles, on returning to their homeland, had no major problems in adapting to the new environments and building a solid community sustained by strong religious and cultural traditions. Their social capabilities were also substantial. More crucial than these, however, were their conviction about the divine promises of restoration, the hope of rebuilding Israel as God’s Kingdom. In this respect, one needs to take more heed of the Biblical testimony that the Deuteronomic view of history had an ongoing influence on the community, stimulating the process of resettlement and providing necessary rationales for their effort. In other words, the formation of the Golah community derived its stimuli mostly from their faith in the redemptive tradition of the Old Testament, especially the Deuteronomic history and the prophetic traditions.
The major arguments for these theses are as follows. First, the Babylonian deportation was a forced migration rather than an uncontrolled dispersion of war refugees. In Babylon they were able to maintain their own identity as a distinct ethnic community. The stories of the second and third generations of the exiles such as Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Mordecai, Tobit, and Susanna, clearly illustrate the prime importance of religious and ethnic identity for the Jewish exiles in Babylon.
Second, the exiles maintained their own faith tradition even in Babylon. Ezekiel shows that the rightful owner of the land of Israel are those who have kept their faith with a provisional sanctuary at the center of their lives (11:17). In Ezra 8, among the returned exiles one finds in particular Iddo, a Levite leader at the place called Casiphia and the nethinim, the temple servants. The existence of these groups of people alludes to the possible maintenance of religious life and the continuous functioning of cultic laborers among the exiles.
Third, there are some evidences that indicate that the return of the Jewish exiles had been prompted by their economic and social prosperity in Babylon. According to the Murašu documents discovered in Nippur, the Jewish exiles of the fifth century B.C. still maintained their own Jewish names. They also accumulated substantial amount of wealth, and became a distinctive minority race successful enough to produce high-ranking officials for the Persian court. People like Ezra, Nehemiah or Esther were all products of the reconstruction movement of the Jews. And their economic prosperity probably caused the resurgence of their ethnic consciousness as Jews. It is highly probable that such wealthy Jews as mentioned in the Murašu documents either joined the returning campaigns of Ezra-Nehemiah or supported them financially.
In sum, the present thesis argues that the formative dynamics of the Golah community include the following three internal factors: 1) their social capability and maintenance of their ethnic tradition; 2) preservation of religious identity even in Babylon; 3) faith in the Deuteronomic view of history as the theological basis for their restoration movement.
