The behavioral learning theory explains learning as observable behaviors, in which sense it has an advantage of specifying the learning process. Considering that a specific approach is more effective than a cognitive one in elementary schools according to children's developmental stages, it is also a useful learning theory. With the appearance of various learning theories such as cognitivism and constructivism, however, the behavioral learning theory has encountered many limitations and has lost of its effectiveness as a learning theory. However, recent advancements in brain science offer biological and brain scanning technologies, which can help to resolve some of the limitations regarding the behavioral learning theory and shed new light onto it.
This study was implemented to gather, analyze, and discuss the brain-scientific research findings about behaviorism, as well as the literature on the behavioral learning theory and brain-science. It analyzed the principles of the behavioral learning theory and identified its four elements, which are desire as preparedness, stimulus as environment and experience, reaction as practice and reinforcement as satisfaction. Based on those components, the investigator reinterpreted the theory brain-scientifically and proposed educational implications applicable to education.
Behaviorism settled down as a domain of psychology by Watson in the early 1900s and evolved into the classical and operant conditioning theory by Pavlov and Skinner, respectively. The behavioral learning theory explains that a process of learning takes place through connection and reinforcement. Connection through the repetition of stimulus-reaction forms actions. Reinforcement increases the rate of desire satisfaction and behavior, thus helping to settle down the objective actions.
Brain-science offers scientific explanations and alternatives about the cognitive and affective aspects of the behavioral learning theory. Receiving significant stimuli through environment and experience, the brain reacts to them by forming synapses. Once formed, the synapses need constant use and repetitive input of related stimuli in order to maintain their connections and expand. Brain-science proves that learning involves affluent stimuli fit for the developmental stage and repetitive practice of the familiar stimuli related to the formed synapses.
Behaviorists used to have no ways to scientifically prove the impacts of psychological factors on learning, in spite of vague estimations. Thanks to the advancements in the biological and brain scanning technologies, however, they finally have the means to obtain scientific grounds to support their estimations. Emotions are created by the neurotransmitters secreted from the reticular formation of the brain stem and the hypothalamus of the limbic system. The human brain should pass the paths related to survival and emotions in order to reach higher-order thinking, in which sense the importance of emotions in learning can be scientifically proven. One of the principles of behavioral learning, reinforcement is regarded as a valid learning method in brain-science, in that it induces and maintains internal reward and motivation.
The study conducted the behavioral theory from the brain-scientific perspective and proposed the following educational implications:
First, it offers sensitive content that can attract learners' attention, thus inducing their desire in the early learning stage. Desire plays an important role in focusing a learners' attention as the brain's desire for something new. Teachers should provide learners with content of an appropriate difficulty level in order to induce their desire and further make short-term goals and interest to maintain their desire to learn.
Secondly, teachers should expand and diversify the opportunities to access learning content by providing enriching stimuli. When there are enrichment stimuli as environment and experience, the brain restructures the neural network and helps with the settlement of study. Teachers use questioning skill to help the students expand the scope of their thinking to make diverse access to the learning content and diversify stimuli paths by utilizing teaching and learning media. They also need to allow the information of input stimuli to be automatically processed by using appropriate signals and signs such as promises with the students. By taking those measures, the teachers can help the students expand their memory capacity and input the content they have learned well.
Thirdly, teachers should promote the settlement of objective behavior and learning efficiency through repetitive practice. Both the behavioral learning theory and the brain-scientific perspective have the premise for learning in the repetitive practice of related stimuli. However, simple repetition can make learning boring, in which vein the teachers should segment and elucidate the learning stages to maintain the students' attention. They also need to categorize the learning content and adjust to diverse situations to allow for repetitive practice under various contexts. Thanks to their efforts, students can repetitively implement the content related to the learning topic, thus elaborating the neural network and increasing the volume of information processing.
Lastly, students need to increase self-directed learning abilities through intrinsic reinforcement, which is a learning experience that well applies the advantages of reinforcement principle. Intrinsic reinforcement allows learners to concentrate on learning. It also increases learners' potentials by having them take active and pleasant part in the process without stress. As a matter of fact, the brain secrets dopamine in a positive emotional situation and keeps the learner's motivation for learning. Thus, teachers should create a friendly environment so that their students keep concentrating on the learning process. They also need to provide self-reflective evaluations and feedback of strong emotional stimuli related to the students so that the students can keep being flowed in learning. Self-related stimuli induce emotions and increase learning motivation, thus creating energy to keep learning. Through intrinsic reinforcement, the students select and apply learning strategies in a self-directed manner and cultivate self-directed learning abilities to meet the social needs of the 21st century.
Human beings encounter continuous incoming stimuli throughout their lives. Various stimuli compete in the brain, and learners tend to select familiar and significant ones. Selected stimuli form strong neural networks through repetitive practice, and create diverse semantic contexts as neurotransmitters are secreted through emotional responses. Those processes continue throughout life, which reveals the possibility of lifelong learning beyond the school period. Brain plasticity is not only a requirement in the 21st century where information keeps being produced, it is also a hopeful piece of evidence for active human reactions. In the future, a more complete learning theory will be formulated that considers both the cognitive and affective domain by analyzing learning processes in details based on the brain-scientific research findings.
