As a driver performs driving, a tension is caused with high concentration of consciousness for processing the information of various external stimuli, a driver gets distracted by feeling stress and fatigue, and the arousal level of the driver increases, which deters the safe driving. The factors that distract a driver in a vehicle may be the external stimuli and the secondary tasks that a driver performs besides driving.
Until now, though there have been the studies on the masking effect using sound stimuli, which have high pleasantness, to reduce the damage due to the external auditory stimuli, it is true that there are no sufficient studies on the masking effect of olfactory stimuli. And also, the studies to relieve fatigue and stress due to secondary tasks in a dynamic environment of driving are not enough.
In this study, the effect of auditory stimuli on drivers and the masking effect of olfactory stimuli were investigated with autonomic nervous system responses, and also it was observed whether highly concentrated oxygen was effective to the stress due to secondary tasks in a dynamic environment. To find out the masking effect of olfactory stimuli on the auditory stimuli with a graphic driving simulator, bio signals(HRV, GSR) were observed, and how oxygen concentration(40%) affected the stress due to secondary tasks was observed through HR and driving performance ability.
As a result of the experiment on the masking effect of olfactory stimuli on the auditory stimuli, GSR response increased showing a significant difference as a result of the comparison of pre-and post auditory stimuli experiment(1)(p<0.01), experiment(2)(p<0.05), experiment(3)(p<0.01), driving performance experiment(2)(p<0.01), experiment(3)(p<0.01), and olfactory stimuli experiment(3)(p<0.05) respectively. It means that when auditory stimuli were presented, sympathetic nervous system got activated and a driver was in an arousal state.
However, Peppermint aroma didn’t affect the arousal state by auditory stimuli during driving. That is, the masking effect of olfactory stimuli on auditory stimuli wasn’t certified.
The reasons of the failure of the masking effect are supposed as follows, that is, ①GSR is to measure skin resistance, and as the perspiration exuded by the tension due to driving performance affected the measurement of skin resistance, it was certified that GSR measurement was not appropriate to a dynamic environment ② adaptation to aroma stimuli ③ preference of aroma and ④ Simulator sickness. In the ratio of LF/HF of HRV, there was difference according to whether Peppermint aroma was presented or not in the situation where auditory stimuli was presented during driving performance. As a result of the comparison of auditory stimuli during driving performance before and after presenting Peppermint aroma, it decreased showing a significant difference(p<0.05). That is, the activation of sympathetic nervous system got reduced and parasympathetic nerve system got activated. It is considered that there was a masking effect of olfactory stimuli on the noise as arousal level happened by the auditory stimuli during driving got lower due to Peppermint aroma.
As a result of the experiment on stress relief, there was a significant difference between oxygen concentration(21%) and oxygen concentration (40%)(p<0.01) and HR increased when oxygen concentration was 21%. Also, there was a significant difference between stimuli (Control, Driving, Driving + Task)(p<0.05), and as a result of post hoc test(LSD), Driving + Task increased showing a significant difference compared with Control(p<0.01).
That is, when a driver performed addition tasks during driving, his or her sympathetic nervous system got activated. Especially, when highly concentrated oxygen(40%) was presented, Heart Rate(HR) decreased. Therefore, it is considered that highly concentrated oxygen(40%) affected the performance of the addition tasks during driving more positively than oxygen concentration(21%). And as a result of comparing driving performance, there was no significant difference according to oxygen concentration(21%, 40%). That is, it was found out that there was no difference in driving performance.
It can be said that this study is meaningful in that through this study, the masking effect of olfactory stimuli on the auditory stimuli was examined, and whether highly concentrated oxygen affected the stress due to secondary tasks or not was observed. However, as the experiment was proceeded only in a limited condition in this study, there are things still desired. First, though conducting the experiment using a real vehicle may give trouble in keeping the safety of a driver, as the driving environment using a graphic driving simulator was different from that of driving a real vehicle, the subject felt a difficulty in graphic driving simulator and complained of Simulator sickness. As the experiment was conducted only for the men in twentieth, there are some limitations in generalizing to females and the men in over twentieth.
In a further study, it is necessary to get the objective statistic data by including the people in various ages and increasing the number of the subjects, and by diversifying the driving scenario of graphic driving simulator, there will be a study of the masking effect and distraction due to secondary tasks.
