Existing river flow measurement methods have problems in that they require high cost and a large manpower input and carry a risk during measurement. As a result, a non-contact method of measuring flow without directly entering the river has recently been drawing attention. Surface Image Velocimetry (SIV) using images is especially applied widely in small streams nationwide and national rivers, as it is non-contact and can simultaneously measure the flow velocity at all points of the measurement section. However, there is no published indicator of the measurement results' reliability since almost no research has been conducted to calculate the SIV's uncertainty. Thus, this study calculated uncertainty according to the change in light brightness, considered to significantly affect image acquisition among the factors of SIV uncertainty, and reviewed the applicability of thermal SIV using a thermal camera in a lightless environment.
To analyze the change in uncertainty according to the change in light brightness, this study carried out hydraulic experiments in a 10m wide, small stream waterway, with controllable flow rates on gravel beds, in the river test center of the Korea Institute of Construction Technology. In the experiment, the uncertainty was calculated by comparing the average flow velocity of the 300 areas simultaneously measured by SIV according to the illuminance change of sunlight and artificial light, and the analysis areas' illuminance was measured using an illuminance meter. Also, to compensate for the disadvantage of SIV, which cannot be analyzed in the absence of light, the study examined the applicability of thermal surface velocimetry according to the change in illuminance of sunlight and artificial light.
The results of measuring uncertainty for the change in light brightness showed that for sunlight (0 lx ~ 54,000.00 lx), the uncertainty was calculated to be less than 2% in the illuminance of 7,620.00 lx ~ 54,000.00 and less than 5% in the illuminance of 513.00 lx ~ 6,830.00 lx. Uncertainty increased rapidly for the illuminance under 274.00 lx, and maximum uncertainty of 50.69% was calculated at 2.80 lx, the minimum measurable illuminance. For artificial light (14.10 lx ~168.60 lx), the minimum uncertainty of 10.65 % was calculated at the illuminance of 168.60 lx and the maximum uncertainty of 21.30 % at the illuminance of 30.40 lx. To confirm the applicability of thermal SIV using a thermal camera, this study calculated uncertainty according to changes in the illuminance of sunlight and artificial light. The result was less than 1% of uncertainty at the measured illuminance (sunlight: 0 lx ~ 2,000.00 lx, artificial light: 20.10 lx ~ 102.90 lx). Moreover, the uncertainty of less than 1% was calculated when the illuminance was 0 lx, confirming the applicability of thermal SIV even in an environment without light.
According to the uncertainty analysis result, a large difference in uncertainty appeared in the same illuminance because, even with the same illuminance, the distribution of light and shade on the water surface differed in the image taken according to the positional relationship between the light source and the camera, even with the same illuminance. Therefore, it was confirmed that the standard deviation of gray values in the analysis area has a closer relationship with uncertainty than light brightness and that the uncertainty increased rapidly when the standard deviation of gray values in the analysis area was less than 12. Uncertainty was up to 2.5% in the standard deviation of gray values in the analysis area between 12-35, and the analysis results were organized to present the relational expression between the standard deviation of gray values in the analysis area and uncertainty.
This study analyzed the flow velocity measurement uncertainty of SIV according to the change in light brightness under limited hydraulic conditions. To obtain total uncertainty, it is judged that should be carried out continuously to calculate the various uncertainty factors of SIV. In addition, to universally evaluate the applicability of thermal SIV, it is necessary to conduct research on various conditions such as temperature, flow velocity scale, weather, as well as illuminance.
