Understanding and intervening in students with disabilities is a major area of concern for special educators who are responsible for the education of students with disabilities. Problem behavior in students with emotional and behavioral disorders refers to maladaptive intrinsic and extrinsic behaviors that deviate from social expectations and norms and are triggered by a variety of factors, including less than ideal living environments such as home and school. The theory of Positive Behavior Support (PBS), which emerged in the mid-1980s, began to attract attention as an effective approach to dealing with problem behaviors of students with disabilities in an appropriate and non-hostile way.
The purpose of this study is to identify the problematic behavior of students with emotional and behavioral disorders through the case of Special School S, to review the concept and meaning of positive behavior support as a coping methodology, and to explore how positive behavior support is implemented in special schools in the field. First, what are the problematic behavior patterns and causes of students with emotional and behavioral disorders, what are their characteristics, and why are they problematic? Second, what are the theoretical backgrounds of positive behavior support programs and how should they be designed for schools with emotional and behavioral disorders? Third, what interventions for problem behavior are used as the basis of positive behavior support programs? Fourth, what are the experiences of teachers in the operation and application of positive behavior support at the special school level? Fifth, what are the strategies for preventing and improving the problem behavior of students with emotional and behavioral disorders?
To summarize the findings of this study, first, students in schools with emotional and behavioral disorders exhibited various types of problem behaviors, including aggressive behaviors, depressive and anxiety behaviors, self-injurious behaviors, and antisocial behaviors, depending on the type, severity, and individual characteristics of the disorder. Teachers provide interventions for these behaviors because they have a negative impact on the safety and learning rights of other students as well as the students themselves. Second, in schools with emotional and behavioral disorders, teachers determine interventions based on their impact on students' behavior. For example, they may identify the reasons for students' misbehavior, develop coping strategies, or use positive reinforcement to encourage and reward desirable behaviors. These interventions can help students learn and develop by alleviating problem behaviors and improving the classroom environment. Third, in schools for emotional and behavioral disorders, positive behavioral support has been actively adopted to intervene in students' problem behaviors. To this end, special teachers actively cooperate with the Positive Behavior Support Department to prevent students' problematic behaviors and provide appropriate interventions to promote students' active participation in education. It can be seen that these efforts are having a positive impact on improving the educational environment and promoting students' active participation in education.
However, despite these efforts, special education teachers in schools for emotional and behavioral disorders face various difficulties, including difficulties in identifying antecedents to problem behavior, heavy workloads, and lack of contact with families. As a result, teachers emphasize the need for specific, individualized, and extensive administrative and financial support for positive behavior supports to be better implemented and operationalized: resources and staffing based on an understanding of emotional and behavioral disorders and special school operations. If these efforts are realized, students with emotional and behavioral disorders will be able to thrive in a more positive environment.
This study suggests that the importance of positive behavioral supports should be emphasized as a way to understand and respond to the problem behaviors of students with emotional and behavioral disorders, and that the role of the educational environment and teachers is crucial in mediating students' problem behaviors in schools with emotional and behavioral disorders. In addition, there needs to be a collaborative relationship between parents and schools, specific, individualized, and extensive administrative funding, and resources and personnel based on an understanding of emotional and behavioral disorders and school management. If these conditions are met, students with emotional and behavioral disorders will be more engaged in school, and their overall academic achievement and satisfaction with school will increase.
