Video traffic has increased rapidly and is considered as major data source in mobile networks. In order to efficiently accommodate these huge mobile videos, a combination of video multicasting, cooperative relaying, and network coding (NC) can be a good candidate among 5G network technologies. Scalable video coding can support spatial, temporal, and quality scalability with high coding efficiency. The scalability allows receivers to experience video quality according to their channel conditions. Nevertheless, if a layer of the scalable video is lost, all subsequent layers that depend on the lost layer are rendered useless, which leads to lowered video quality and bandwidth inefficiency. Two characteristics are considered in particular in the scalable video transmission. First, additional layer bitstreams carried in transmission constitute a burden in terms of time or bandwidth. Second, if a layer is lost, subsequent layers depending on the lost layer are useless even though they can be successfully decoded. Consequently, we need to provide unequal error protection (UEP) for scalable layers in resource efficiency manner to tackle these characteristics. On the other hand, network coding has many benefits, such as minimum delay, minimum energy per bit and maximum throughput, that have been exploited for the Internet, consisting of both wired and wireless networks. However, there are two major drawbacks: rank deficiency problem and high encoding/decoding complexities. Unfortunately, these two drawbacks leads to the processing delay at receiver that is more challenge for multimedia delivery applications because of time constraint in video processing. In this dissertation, we investigate the application of network coding for multimedia content delivery over three general scenarios: multi-hop line network, uploading and multicasting. For each scenario, we propose various transmission methods over the corresponding scenarios not only inherit benefits but also tackle the disadvantages from both scalable video coding and network coding. For multi-hop line network, we firstly derive the closed-form expression for theoretical analysis of decoding probability of systematic network coding over single and multi-hop point-to-point communication. Furthermore, we propose incremental network coding with Testbed implementation which can reduce the processing delay with high decoding probability. For uploading case, we propose distributed systematic network coding operated at relay station. The proposed network code not only reduces the encoding and decoding complexities but also increases the capability of progressive packet decoding. For scalable video multicast, we proposed two schemes: efficient scalable video multicast based on network-coded cooperation and inter-layered superposition with digital network coding. Both schemes target to provide unequal error protection for scalable video along with bandwidth efficiency. The first scheme focuses on the practical implementation of network coding at application layer. The second scheme takes the advantage of superposition coding at physical layer and digital network coding. The proposed schemes have been evaluated by theoretical analysis and simulations. We did various simulations to evaluate the performance corresponding to the different settings. The results demonstrated that our proposal can improve perceptual video quality with bandwidth efficiency. Besides, we also provide a discussion on drawbacks of our proposed schemes. Furthermore, challenges on performing network coding on vehicular network are also described.
