Islam is a religion of about 1,407 years’ history, established by Muhammad in AD 610, and it is the fastest growing religion in the US.
Many Islam historians say that the greatest motivation for growth of Islam is “Dawah”. Through “Dawah”, Muslims are continually renewing their communities internally, and expanding their boundaries.
In arabic, “Da’wah” means friendly calling of non-Muslims into Muslim societies without pressure as can be seen from the Quran 16:25 : “invite all to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious; for thy Lord knoweth best, who have strayed from his Path, and who receive guidance(Surah 16:125)”
Dawah has developed in various forms along the history and contributed to the growth of Islam. It was in Unified Shilla dynasty when Korea contacted the Islamic world for the first time and the Islam religion in Korea experienced a rapid growth since May 1976 when the first mosque opened in Itaewon.
And the number of Muslims among Koreans are continually increasing. The reasons for Koreans to convert to Islam is very diverse such as visit to mosque, studying in an Islam country, job experiences of relevance with Islam, etc..
Especially, the number of Korean islams rapidly increased since 1990s. This results from influx of foreigners based on the lack of laborers, low birthrate and ageing. Also, the reasons for growth of Islam is immigration, fertility, marriage and conversion to Islam.
Chapter 2 of this study looked into the factors affecting the expansion of muslim population in Korea. It also tried to understand the situation of the next generation and their crisis and necessity for mission in relevance to the future of the Korean churches.
Chapter 3 tried to looked into the definition, historic development and methodologies of Islamic Dawah which is the ground for the Islamic expansion and thereby contribute to correct understanding on Islamic Dawah. It also looked into the history and the methodologies of Islamic Dawah in Korea. It also looked into the seriousness of the exposure of the next generation to Islam by analyzing major three activities of Dawah by Korean Islam towards the next generation, namely education and publication, broadcasting and media on internet websites.
Chapter 4 looked into the positions of the Islamophobia on strategic and proactive Dawah activiies of Korean Islams, means for peaceful co-existence of Christianity and Islam and also the evangelical standpoint to establish the stance against Dawah activities by Korean Islam.
Chapter 5 looked into evangelical strategies of Jesus as a biblical model for effective mission and the importance of evangelical dialectics as a countermeasure against Islam by Christianity. It also looked into countermeasures against Dawah activities such as education, publication and media and the strategies for evangelism for restoration and revival of the next generation of Korean churches and strategies for evangelism for the next generation of Korean muslim migrants as countermeasures and strategies against Dawah activities of Korean Islam for next generation.
This study is done in a sincere hope that this may contribute to the revival of the next generation Korean churches by knowing Islam right and coping with it like Jesus’ teaching “... Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as dovees.(Matthew 10:16)”, and thus turn the crisis of expansion of Korea’s muslim population into an opportunity for evangelism by preaching gospel with Father’s heart and love to muslims entering Korea and raising them as Jesus’ disciples and expand the kingdom of God.
