This study aims to explore what kind of experiences foreign students who are experiencing acculturative stress have through art therapy and what the meaning of the experiences is. For this purpose, the narrative inquiry suggested by Clandinin and Connely(2000) was selected as the research method. Narrative inquiry, one of qualitative research methods, is the way to understand human experience, and it is effective in understanding the lives of individuals or minorities because it understands and reconstructs the experiences of research participants in a social context.
Referring to a total five-step narrative inquiry procedure presented by Clandinin and Connely (2000), the process of this study was conducted in three steps; “being in the field,” “from field to field text and composing field text,” and "from field text to research text and composing research text.”
Two Vietnamese students in their 20s were selected as the study participants. The researcher conducted a pre- and post- interview and a total of 6 art therapy sessions for one month in February 2022. Recorded filed of art therapy sessions, session logs, and photos of the participants' art works were used as field texts for this study.
The stories of the research participants' experience were composed of five in total. <Pinky Spring: Family that comes to mind with the excitement of warm spring> The excitement of studying in Korea and the regret of not being able to be with family, <The Change of Seasons: Adapting to Korea> Adaptation to Korean culture, <Fall with Typhoon: Difficulties in Studying in Korea> The discrimination received by Koreans and various feelings toward family members, <The Rainy Season of Fickle Fall: Unexpected Worries> Re-acculturation and concerns about the future, <Autumn with High Sky and Plump Horses: What I gained from studying in Korea> Growth and discovery of a new side of oneself.
The meaning of the art therapy experiences of foreign student formed through this is as follows. First, <look back and face myself> Participants in the study, who were undergoing acculturative stress but did not recognize that their self-esteem had decreased, had time to look back and face themselves through art therapy. Second, <Positively looking at studying abroad in Korea and one's future> Participants in the study recognized the good aspect’s of studying in Korea through art therapy and looked at the future positively. Third, <Getting closer to each other through art work> Participants in the study who made acquaintance with each other were able to get closer through art therapy and communicate with Korean therapists to form intimacy. Fourth, <Wanting to share experience in art work> Participants in the study, who had positive experiences through art therapy, expressed their desire to share art therapy experiences with other foreign students.
This study has the following significance. Through this study, it was an opportunity for researchers and research participants to grow, and be able to understand in depth acculturative stress experiences international students experienced in studying in Korea. In addition, when conducting art therapy for foreigners including foreign student, it is necessary that art therapists need in-depth understanding of the country and culture of participants and an open attitude to multiculturalism, and this study contributed to the diversity of art therapy qualitative research for foreigners.
This study attempted to understand the acculturative stress and art therapy experience of foreign student in various ways, and confirmed that art therapy can help foreign students with psychological and emotional problems and life abroad. Through this, it is hoped that this study can be used as a reference to art therapy research for foreign student in the future. In addition, as a suggestion for follow-up research, it is suggested that the reliability of research needs to be increased by securing the number and diversity of research participants and the meaning of new experiences needs to be discovered by the operation of long-term art therapy programs.
