A Study on Eroticism in Korean Feminine Poetry
Yoon, Hyang Ki
Department of Korean Linguistics & Literature
Graduate school Kyonggi University
This paper aims to find out how femineity immanent in cognition eroticism in Korean feminine poetry is expressed at each period. It looks into social, cultural, and psychological roles and characteristics of natural femineity. It also discusses, through sex which is human identification continuously changing in accordance with specific purposes and economic rule structure, how “three types of eroticism such as physical eroticism, inner eroticism, and sacred eroticism”1) symbolize isolation of existence and reveal continuity of existence by getting entangled with diverse social and cultural factors in poetic literature. Eroticism is a historical concept that is changing depending on periodic circumstances rather than something transcendental. True completion of eroticism, which is an axis of loss and recovery of physical sense, comes from basic bodies through sex activities. Bodies and pleasure have been repressed by western ‘unfair spirit oriented principle.’ Human bodies and pleasure are not such factors that can be denied and repressed. Bodies and spirit are not separate and human’s pleasure can even reach a religious territory.
However, there is something complicated between sex and eroticism as very complex concepts are existing between them. There are issues of biology, emotion of love and sociological controversy, gender of the 2nd sex and suppression and equality, and religious eroticism. Those are not clear enough by themselves and arguments on those are still very controversy. Under this circumstance, this paper is willing to discuss eroticism expressed in Korean feminine poetry via an issue frame of femineity.
As stated above, a human body is a limited and biological organ. But, as the 2nd language of human beings, it is an immortal space of lives covering from ultra-nature to visual world. Eroticism is a territory which is filled with lives breathing within the space of creation and where an ego is recovering. It is also the original spirit immanent in life and death which are humans’ true nature. Nevertheless, due to prejudice against sex, eroticism has been treated as an outsider in literary study. Therefore, the author looks in turns into how three types of eroticism such as physical eroticism, inner eroticism, and sacred eroticism symbolize isolation of existence and reveal continuity of existence by getting entangled with diverse social and cultural factors in poetic literature, through sex which is human identification continuously changing in accordance with specific purposes and economic rule structure.
After recognizing problems in existing old research, this study aims to become a cornerstone of research on Korean eroticism literary by investigating the progress of eroticism admitted in Korean feminine poetry. In Korean literature, it has rarely been conducted to form a general feminine poetic opinion by criticism on eroticism literary. Thus, in order to examine how the dominating logic to form eroticism is evolving, the author 1) defines the concept of eroticism, 2) illuminates eroticism with writer’s more macro-spirit, 3) finds out that Eros and Thanatos are closely united and form a multilayered meaning network by analyzing the imagination of Eros and Thanatos who have appeared to be women in works. Therefore, to prove via poetic works that eroticism is a major literary subject issue as humans’ general spirit, will be able to lead the sexual discussion to the core argument center.
True nature of eroticism expressed in poetry is tightly bound with self-completion or self-inflammation. Therefore, the author closely analyzes the poets’ works based on creative imagination of eros through the eroticism in feminine poems. Consequently the author finds out that progress of eroticism can be different depending on diachronic developments. By inducing eroticism hidden in humans’ general and original consciousness, eroticism will become a more important subject issue in feminine literature. Linking the argument to femineity is in order not to become a study on mankind’s general eroticism but to discuss women’s bodies and eroticism under a view point of social meaning of femineity. For this, the author picks Korea’s 17 major female poets as the discussion subjects. These poets have frequently been mentioned in critic history of literature or have been controversial due to their unprecedented poetic expression on femineity.
In the first chapter of eroticism, some feminine poems are dealt with, which are resisting the symbolic bodies of desires and patriarchy. There is something in common in this chapter, that is, to find ‘feminine ego’ as human beings as well as women who are escaping from the patriarchy in Korea’s early modern society. They are showing a feature of worriers fighting against the patriarchy. And although they are personally sacrificed by the time, their efforts and cultural achievement are able to give a birth to Korean feminist movement and feminine literature. In 1920’s~1950’s when egos are found in those resistance and self awakening, Kim Myung Soon, Nah Hye Seok, Kim Il Yup, Rho Chun Myung, and Moh Yoon Sook are illuminated. Among them, Kim Myung Soon, Nah Hye Seok, and Kim Il Yup become pioneers of feminine literature by unveiling the other side of the patriarchy.
After Korea’s liberation from Japanese colony, Roh Chun Myung and Moh Yoon Sook follow the pioneers. In general, these two poets are believed to have quite different poetic worlds from those Kim Myung Soon, Nah Hye Seok, and Kim Il Yup stated earlier. However, from the view point of femineity and eroticism, despite the differences, there is something in common among them. Although femineity is melt in local lyricism and this sounds as if singing women’s adaptable and resigned egos embraced by men’s ideology, it seems that women’s poetic emotion and self-consciousness are melt into the other side. It is commonly said that Roh Chun Myung’s poems and poetic egos are not free from Christian original sin. But on the other hand, obtaining sacred eroticism by purifying one’s body is at last to recover the true life. In other words, as an erotic symbol in which mundaneness contains a meaning of death and sacredness contains a meaning of life, Utopia is wanted in order to cure an unachievable drive mechanism and trauma in reality.
On the contrary, during the same period, Mo Yoon Sook leaves future oriented and universal poems with strong national pride. Although some reasonably believe that she has played a role of a tool of dictatorship due to her biographic life. However, this paper tries to assess her poems objectively apart from the meaning of her personal life. Her will power to overcome extremity is noticeable in her poems as a modest reflection of the periodic spirit. It is assessed that she tries to embody the women’s recognition of their nation by not remaining lyric herself but tracing herself into social and national highness. If assessed by later generations, it is also highly possible that her poems look adaptable and compromising with social ideology. However, she supports duality of body and soul and describes her platonic love in 『Ren’s Lamentations』 which creates a big sensation. Speaking to the society and anguishing over nation’s reality as a woman, are much differentiated aspects compared to Roh Chun Myung. Nonetheless, although the women’s identification and bodies that Kim Myung Soon, Nah Hye Seok, and Kim Il Yup have found, contain social and political implications and her poems also have the same meaning structure in broad definition, there is a certain limit that her poems intend to retreat feminine poetry from social and political eroticism back to private and emotional dimension. Consequently, the eroticism that Roh Chun Myung and Moh Yoon Sook look for, at last shows a limit of reduction oriented character.
In the second chapter, attempts to escape from the phallus oriented system through basic sex as embodiment of desires are discussed. In 1960’s~1990’s, Hug Young Ja, Moon Jung Hee, Kang Eun Kyo, Ko Jung Hee, Choi Seung Ja, and Kim Hye Soon are illuminated. Huh Young Ja and Moon Jung Hee in their works make efforts to make endless unification with the universe, even if recognizing that appearance of femineity in poetry is lack of their bodies. The author names their works feminine poetry as basic life nature. Eroticism as basic life nature ultimately means a consolidation between the world and the universe, a recovery of basic instinct, a recovery of lost objects, and a harmonized paradise. They unite with the ground through bodies, take delight with the universe, and describe productive motherhood via poetry without any hesitation.
As if humans’ paradise in history reappears symbolically via mothers’ wombs, it is very suggestive that the peak of eroticism at each period is finalized by means of women’s bodies, because it is a natural result that gathered individual sex becomes a cornerstone of sociological sex or the periodic topic just as if the universe consists of countless terminals. This paper illuminates Kang Eun Kyo who creates a poetic configuration showing embodiment of a perfect universe within each terminal and Ko Jung Hee’s criticism that resists deep-rooted discrimination for women’s employment and a phallus oriented society and discloses the reality of prostitution phenomenon. The author regards this as feminine poetry is restoring popular nature. Here, popularity is a more general and wider concept rather than a concept of class, that is, it refers to all the existing lives but the weak in a society. It is understood that the progress in which those social minority is recovering their egos through the nature is discussed. In that sense, their poetry is restoring the femineity that has been distorted and abased in history, by reinterpreting the historic individuals such as Bah-Ree-Tae-Kee, Hwang Jin Yee, and Shin Sah-eem-dang via new angles and voices in favor of feminist movement.
In 1990’s, this paper looks into Choi Seung Ja and Kim Hye Soon. They scold their time when sex becomes a means for pleasure as capitalism develops and sexual pleasure gets materialized, and they disclose isolated women in the society that exploits and persecutes the women’s sex. However, this method is unique in a sense that it is paradoxically a format of confession rather than blame or buck-passing and it is a self disclosure. In Choi Seung Ja’s poems, the writer’s role-play is appearing, which makes fun of a destructive death and overcomes pains by disassembling her body in order to go beyond the men’s world. Kim Hye Soon’s feminiety completes the unification between nature and lives existing by themselves beyond an invisible ecosystem, sex and mundaneness, and good and bad.
The third chapter is about the status of eroticism expressed in virtual world. This chapter deals with cyber feminine poems and homosexual imaginary poems that refer to sex with machines, resisting the provocative body power and a phallus oriented system that bodies find as symbols of desires. There are eroticism poets in 2000’s such as Shin Hyun Lim, Lee Youn Joo, Choi Young Mee, Kim Eon Hee, Ahn Hyun Mee, and Kim Ee Deum. Since they are relatively young and still in developing progress, it looks essential to pay attention to them further. Shin Hyun Lim and Lee Youn Joo are sexually more provocative among them, and Choi Young Mee and Kim Eon Hee are illuminated for a methodology of cyber feminism appeared in a virtual reality. And for a bisexual and homosexual methodology, Ahn Hyun Mee and Kim Ee Deum are discussed.
Decisiveness is noticeable in femineity in Shin Hyun Lim’s poetry. The femineity opens its body and applies sexual provocation and bodies to create figuration aesthetically. It functions as a carnival which is dissociating poem literature from existing literary system as a psychological mechanism in which extreme self contempt and longing for liberation are condensed into anti-cultural impulse. It implies that the entire imaginary system on symbolic system’s changeability has exterminated by extreme recognition of contradictions about reality. It also implies individual evilness exposed helplessly in front of the world’s power. It sometimes bears testimony on physical prison, physical death, and physical abnormality and disablement.
In Lee Youn Joo’s case, she discloses her existence, and sexuality functions as resisting social system’s violence rather than private and subjective expression. Then, sexuality gets upgraded to eroticism territory. Lee Youn Joo enlightens a memory on something dirty, shockingly reports how mighty memory’s power is, and counterattacks an idea vaguely realized based on appropriate reality recognition. Therefore, she shows how beauty is based on ugliness and ironically shows that real lives can be distorted when ugliness is disguised by beauty. In this sense, the voluntary death and poetic world of Lee Youn Joo who accepts abused and disgraced but true-life-longing women’s ego identity as poetic subjects are able to be the examples expressing at the extreme edge position our poetry world in relation to death in 1990’s.
Choi Young Mee produces obscene poetic words prohibited socially and culturally such as ‘Ssip’, ‘Did that’, and ‘The last sex’. This is a linguistic strategy in order to unveil hidden hypocrisy and illusions. This provocation is poetic words apart from women’s uses satisfying men’s sexual desires. Men have disparaged this provocation dreaming of having sex with impersonal computers as ‘prostitute’s violence’. The time when sexual terms become obstacles to female writers has gone. Now, prohibited poetic terms and words have settled down as poetic spirits by challenges of highly specialized women without any compensation or expectation from dominating power. Although this is not a perfect separation from the fields of production and politics, by sexual expression in poetry revealing the diversity of repressed desires and instincts of ruled party, reality contradictions of a sense of restraint, a sense of alienation, and a sense of confinement become to look liberalizing.
With regard to Kim Eon Hee’s poems, the strongest word is ‘Incest’ among the shocking and grotesque Kim Eon Hee’s texts. The poet’s provocative sense of destruction is very seductive as it is open to a new direction, because a true destruction is meaningful only when a new production is collateralized. In her poems, her body is her mother’s body that is useless for her father to execute his law, a poet’s body, women’s ignoble bodies, and the negative images of the objects thrown around boundaries and outskirts. She nearly reaches Kristeva’s Abjection theory and is even absorbed in a visual world one step aside from there. Her denial of production nature is therefore a mechanism with more inevitable consequences.
Ahn Hyun Mee and Kim Ee Deum are pursuing homosexual love inducing homosexual imaginations and a sexual equality. Their words are not romantic any more. Their sharp eyes absorbed in disintegration and transposition of a subject, doesn’t reach the scope of love which tried to communicate with others beyond the subject. The minimum condition for a poem of love is passion to open its subject and contact objects. Their poems are reorganizing families and sexuality in this time era when the new cultural concepts such as a sub-culture, an alternative family, and homosexual love are not unfamiliar any more. They are becoming a holly place showing deconstruction of a formality by displaying life, love, sex, and freedom on the negative altar intensified with death in a space where bizarre and peculiar homosexual desires and heterosexual fear are crashing to each other. It is very brave and advanced that the women’s desires that have been existing as objects to male subjects at one point realize and pursue their desires as subjects.
Although there could be some concerns on that their sexual expression is so vulgar and destructive to lead to a literary decadence, it should be considered as a more productive literary style in that the meaning of sexual expression returns arts to our realistic lives and induces an equal thought via destroying our icon, that is, our stubborn cognition. In that sense, sexual expression is pursuing open literature. It breaks old concrete ideas and brings up problems of reality and existence through converting cognition, simultaneously. Therefore, it leads a subject’s recovery which would be likely to get lost in reality and thus awakens consciousness of liberty. Thus, it is a productive discussion which can possibly allow an open mindset inside ourselves.
The power of feminine poetry, which becomes energy to break civilizations and an eros to change civilizations and returns a modern civilization system to a pre-civilization order, is the eroticism that has achieved basic pleasure between rule and be-ruled and between sadism and masochism. This paper analyses diverse aspects of eroticism from aesthetic bases, literary theories, and feminism contained in feminine poetry, a sense of life in eroticism, violation and reversion, and recovery and exposure appeared in eco-feminism poetry, moreover body’s provocation, dehumanized virtual world, and sexual carnival, to a recent phenomenon of homosexual imagination.
Development of biotechnology has dismantled borders of sexual culture and brought a big change as much as it should be interpreted as a scientist’s territory. All women of yesterday, today, and future encounter each other’s figures in this paper. Through one poem, they trace their own world view to each other’s lives. It is not writing a poem that a poet is writing a poem but the universe system expressed via a poem through us. In this sense, it is very important that young female poets who have new literary sensibilities and experiences play roles as a producer of achievement, a symbolic producer mediating consumption, and an intermediate. As sexual literature which has stayed at a dispersive level gets redefined as a multivocal space by building value of popular culture, they are actively achieving success amongst literature researchers’ arguments by focusing on a production of enjoyment beyond a sense of resistance.
